A new report from Paul Thurrott claims Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console will be "expensive" at launch, costing "$500, $300 for the subscription, that kind of thing."

Navigate to the 54:44 mark to hear Paul Thurrott discuss Microsoft's next-generation Xbox gaming console.

It's no secret Microsoft's been working on a successor to its Xbox 360 gaming console, but while the console's reported specifications have leaked out, one thing that hasn't been revealed is the console's price – until now, that is, according to a new rumor from Paul Thurrott.

Thurrott claims the next-generation Xbox will be "expensive" at launch, costing as much as $500, though it isn't clear if he was exaggerating the amount compared to current console costs. His sources also corroborated claims that the next Xbox, codenamed "Durango," will require a persistent Internet connection to function, a feature that has widely been criticized on the Internet.

The report came

Thurrott's hosts with Andrew Zarian. In the video, Thurrott said the information he's recently been told meshes with information he's previously received.

"Durango is going to be expensive – you know $500, $300 for the subscription, that kind of thing," he said. "But you know – [it will have] Blu-ray, blah, blah, blah. But the thing that interests me, I'm going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, [and] it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' – that's in the notes. And that's all I have – it does say that."

In addition to the next-generation Xbox, however, Microsoft will also reveal a $99 Xbox 360 console codenamed "Stingray," Thurrott claims. He added that the $99 console is not the set-top box that Microsoft was rumored to be working on, however. Thurrott said that device was codenamed "Yumo" and that it won't be released this year, though it could come at some point in the future.

Thurrott said he doesn't believe Durango will play Xbox 360 games, though he admitted that he doesn't know for sure. He also added that he doesn't know what the always-on Internet requirement will actually entail.

"I don't know, because I don't know what that means," Thurrott said when asked by Zarian if the requirement was a bad thing. "You know, when you look at some of the stories that were coming out this week ... I saw a headline that said something like, 'Next Xbox could be OK without an Internet connection for as long as three minutes,' or something like that. I don't even know what that means."

Microsoft's next Xbox will be announced in May, according to Thurrott's sources. In the episode, Thurrott said the specific date for the reveal is May 21, adding that the console will be released to the general public in early November.

If Thurott's information is accurate, Microsoft would be taking a drastically different approach than it did with the Xbox 360, which at launch cost $299 for a version that lacked a hard drive and $399 for a 20GB version at launch. By comparison, Sony's PlayStation 3 at launch cost $499 for a 20GB version and $599 for a 60GB version.

Report: $500 always-online Xbox successor to launch in early November

Microsoft likely to reveal next-gen console at May event.

Back in February, just after Sony unveiled the first details of its PlayStation 4, rumors started swirling that Microsoft was planning an April event for the successor to the Xbox 360. When March came and went without any official word, many assumed the rumors were just that. Now, new reports suggest that the next Xbox launch event has been pushed back to May 21.

The new date was first revealed by veteran Microsoft journalist and watcher Paul Thurrot on a recent

. The Verge was able to confirm this date with its own sources. This event would come just ahead of E3 (June 11-13), and Microsoft's own developer-focused Build conference starting on June 26, which the company has said will feature content focused on the Xbox.

Thurrot went on to suggest that the next Xbox would be launching in "early November" and that the system is "going to be expensive, $500, $300 with a subscription, that kind of thing." While he didn't reveal a specific source for this information, he presented it with the matter-of-fact assurance of someone who had been briefed directly.

Thurrot also added more fuel to the persistent rumors that the next Xbox will require a constant Internet connection to use. "Going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be Internet connected to use,' that's in the notes," Thurrot said. "That's all I have, but it does say that."

Microsoft recently took some heat when Microsoft Studios Creative Director Adam Orth tweeted that people should learn to deal with the idea of an Internet requirement for a console, saying that it's just "the world we live in." Microsoft later apologized for Orth's "inappropriate" remarks but pointedly refused to offer any further comments on the matter.

Elsewhere in his interview, Thurrot talked about plans for "another version of the Xbox that was just aimed at entertainment," codenamed Yuma. That device has been cancelled for the time being, Thurrot said, in favor of a $99 Xbox 360 (codenamed Stingray) that should be launching around the same time as the follow-up system. All this taken together led him to speculate that the next Xbox won't be backward compatible with current Xbox 360 games.

Meh i bought the old 360 and it cost me around £250 for the standard box with a hard drive and 2 games.

But I usually just game on my pc now so I doubt i'd buy another console, even for all those exclusive titles. PC gaming is cheap (until you need a complete new system)

The good news is, PS4 is having x86 processor this time, and XBOX 720 too is rumoured to have one. Meaning, games would be easier to port to PC. :)

Honestly, I'm tired of seeing good games only releasing in consoles. Just yesterday I watched a preview of Injustice: Gods Among Us, and thought, I'm gonna get it and play it really well. To my disappointment, it's only coming to PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Really pissing me off, this, not on PC model.

Every console it's expensive at launch, and more prone to fail, just look at ps2 and the xbox 360..

Being early adopter it's not good choice

But i honestly don't know why they do it, surely it's easier to make it on pc and port to console than do it the other way round which is why they probably can't be bothered. (plus piracy more prone on pc, probably don't help) but I just want some more content. I know they need some console specific stuff (they should save it for special launches only though)
