broascadilie
Hi guys.I'm an antivirus user since the day i had my first PC ( many years a go ).I ussualy go with Symantec. But i wanna make an 180* turn (180* ? maybe not quite :D ) by giving up on a full AV suite and going for a good firewall solution. Why this change,u may say ?Well i wanna see if i can get used to this and counting that the sites i ussualy visit, are secure i was thinking that maybe i dont need a full AV solution.I think a realy good and lightly firewall will sufice for me.Ofcourse as an aditional protection i will weekly use Mbam and Santispyware and Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool for a full PC scan,(wich i always do) just in case.So pls guys,i want your thoats on this and some recommendations for some very good Firewall solutions ONLY.Thanks and take care ! :)
MinDokan
Hi. I don't understand why you prefer Firewall over AV. Let me explain*, today with routers and Windows Firewall is quite enough. I mean, you will be safe unless you click on any creepy link from any site.Despite my opinion "Firewall over AV", I would recommend Comodo Firewall or Outpost Firewall. Once again, I would prefer a solid AV (the MSE is enough if you know what are you doing) and forget about the firewall. Just use the one on Windows plus the router.* Firewall only programs are worthless, Windows firewall is sufficient. Not the same Firewall with HIPS, that is another thing. And you didn't mention if you want HIPS or not.All the best :)

dcs18
Did you try searching >>----> http://www.nsaneforums.com/topic/91896-which-firewall-protection-do-you-preferuse/That topic is still very much valid as nothing significant has changed in the firewall sector. Thanks for yours,by the wayThere is normally no need for a "firewall only". Using an strong firewall (like Outpost, OA, Comodo, Kaspersky, with HIPS) will make the difference. But, again, HIPS is somehow complicated and it could be more trouble than a solution. I'm not saying that a firewall is worthless, I'm pointing that any firewall without HIPS won't worth much compared to Windows Firewall. In fact, it will consume resources.I'm keeping in mind that you possess a router with proper firewall. The link provided by dcs18 is valid. All the best. GRiM
Just install ESET Smart Security.Done!I dont understand why you dont want a AV on system? It just sits there using very little resources so don't see what harm its doing? Its better to have prevention then a cure.
lazzser
Comodo is one of the best firewalls you can get and it's free, Outpost is very good too, but you will do better with an integrated solution: Kaspersky IS is probably the best one (best combination of AV and FW/HIPS). I prefer ESS because it´s very light on system resources, as it has been said, a cheap router can do the rest.
spudboy
For me personally the ONLY reason I use a software firewall is to have control over which installed apps have inbound and outbound access, and which ones don't. Zone Alarm Free tackels that perfectly with the least amount of setup. I don't need expert rules or any of that nonsense, just a simple yes or no when an app requests in/out access. If you want an AV to go along with it, Zone Alarm also offers a free version of Antivirus + Firewall which contains the Kaspersky AV engine... one of the best in the industry. If you need more than that for your firewall and your router isn't providing any protection, then you may want to pick something else.

bob92132
I am wondering this too. Looking for the lightest weight firewall in RAM usage and install size that can do the following:1. Set filter rules by Application (EXE) for attempted outbound connections.2. Show good log of all attempted connections (along with destination IP and port) per Application (EXE). Should show something like "Processname.exe attempted connection on Protocol UDP from IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX port XXX to IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX port XXX at time HH:MM:SS".Have tried the following:Comodo Firewall (CFW) is 125MB download - not lightweight.LookNStop is very lightweight - but I tried it and its filter setup interface is lacking and not that good. Also its logging display is not that good and doesn't show the IP addresses of connections attempted to be made from applications that are filtered (just shows the entire App as being blocked, doesn't show IP address it tried to connect to).Outpost Firewall - upon quick installation in VM, can't find good log that shows connections attempted to be made along with IPs tried to connect to.So still also searching for the lightest weight firewall that matches these criteria. maia
At this moment, for me, the firewall lighter is PRIVATEFIREWALL: is also very effective, you should try it. Get it here:http://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.htmlIf you want to match it with a light anti-virus, you should RoboScan: that uses the bitdefender engine:http://www.roboscan.com/
