Skype issues/problems

I recently moved from WLM to Skype. The switch wasn't smooth at all. The problems I've faced:

Issue one: Somehow, after clicking on the "Microsoft Account" it hangs there, the loading image keeps going on and after 5-10 mins, it shows no Login page, just blank white page.

Fix: Windows Control Panel > Internet options > Advanced tab > Restore Advanced Settings. Does that fix the problem? Not really, somehow even Comodo is incompatible with the Microsoft Account thing - not only it needs to be excluded in Comodo, it needs to be even disabled at Skype startup. Want to improve it further? When closing Skype, don't "Sign out", just "Quit" Skype from taskbar - this will make Skype login your MS account as soon as you start Skype, without need to see that Microsoft page.

Issue two: Logging in with Microsoft account and selecting I don't have Skype account, gives you a new account, live:your id. Problem? With that ID, you cannot login via normal Skype account, you still need to login via Microsoft account (see issue three).

Issue three: No Windows Live Messenger contacts appear in Skype account, even after merger.

Fix: Following the Skype's instructions is not enough. Turns out, you cannot see WLM accounts if you login via Skype account - you have to login via Microsoft Account with your Microsoft account ID / email address to see your Windows Live Messenger contacts. Can anyone tell me why the f*ck did I "merge" my accounts if I cannot see WLM contacts in Skype username? Issue one makes my this issue especially harder for me.

Issue four: I thought Skype only lacked a button which shows how many Mails you have. Turns out, Skype has no way to check mails, you get no email notifications whatsoever. There's no "check email" button, there's no way to know how many emails you have, there are no email notifications. Why the f*ck does Microsoft wants us to use Skype if it cannot offer such simple functionality. :frusty:

Fix: No fix at the moment. I noted one Microsoft representative saying that "We have got a lot of requests for this required feature. We have forwarded your feedback to futher. Do note, forwarding this feature doen't mean it will be implemented, but it will be considered". -_-

Issue five: You cannot talk to your contacts in a new window like WLM.

Fix: Skype window > View > Compact View. :)

Issue six: Skype emotion sucks. Don't need to explain this. :P

Issue seven: "Closing" Skype keeps it self in the task bar.

Fix: See post 7.

The list goes on. I may update it as I use it futher.

Issue 1: the same for me but not till 5-10 mins!, it hangs mostly for 10 seconds (try the Sign In Automatically so you'll not have to enter the msn and its password everytime)
Issue 2: You have to Sign in on the Skype website (with the msn in issue) > go to profile > then unlink your msn
Issue 3: Quit Skype > Go to "C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming" and Delete the Skype folder then start the Skype again
Issue 4: You are right, Microsoft has to developp the Skype client, it lacks a lot of features!
Issue 5: for me the default view is better ^^
Issue 6: Totally right :)

First of, thanks for the help. :)

1. Yup, I've set it to auto-login. However, as soon as I sign out, it forgets my email and password (and forgets the password in the main Skype [just noting]).

2. I did that. However, guess what, instead of giving me live:myID, unlinking my MS account with my live:ID, it closed and deleted my live:ID account. :( Good news is, I already had a different Skype account, so it wasn't a big trouble - I merged my MS account with my old and original Skype account.

3. Already tried deleting the .db file they had recommend. However, in no way we can get WLM accounts in normal Skype login - one has to login as Microsoft account.

4. The reason I didn't wanted to switch.

5. Dunno, default view does seem slightly better, but when talking to multiple people with having lots of contacts, having a different window feels better. Plus, am used to WLM. :D

6. :P

1- Weird!, Try re-installing Skype it may work

2- Good for you, I also had that issue so when I unlinked it and after a day or 2.. once I tried sign in it on Skype it asked me to merge so I did and since then everything is right

3- Yep, that is their rule! you should connect using the Microsoft account if you want to see the Skype+WLM Contacts in one place, I had the issue of not seeing my Messenger contacts even after merging (using the Microsoft account!) So I deleted the Skype folder mentioned above and next time I signed in everything went fine :)

Well Generally I think Skype is good but they have to include some features from WLM and Improve the UI, I miss the color font choice and WLM emoticons + they have to make Skype show the contact picture a little bit more bigger+ the possibility to send offline messages :D

1. Did, checked everything, same problem.

2. Good to hear that.

3. That the thing I don't understand, why not make Skype login have Microsoft contacts too? Basically you have merged the things, you need contacts there. I even imported the contacts - somehow it loves forgetting them after sign out - making me think contacts not appearing on Skype account is a bug.

Skype's IM sucks big time. It's the greatest calling software ever, but it's IM is worse than all the cheap / free IMs out there. MS seriously needs to fix Skype's problems and improve the IM. You can send offline messages in Skype (text, not talking about audio or video), I know cause I tried. :P

For windows 7 and 8 Skype needs this adjustment:

post-30560-0-75337200-1365924735_thumb.p

After it the minimize button minimizes to the taskbar, close button closes to the tray.

You missed the point - when a command to close is issued the program needs to simply shutdown (not minimize - regardless to Task Bar or Sys Tray.)

Thanks, that helps alot.

EDIT: Added to first post. :)

Agreed. However, in this case, something is better than nothing. :)

For a vital communications program like this which is designed to be running all the time, I don't think it would benefit the general population of users for it to summarily exit when someone innocently uses the close button. They should provide the option for it to do that, as many tray apps do, which would satisfy the minority of users who don't leave Skype running.

I don't really see the value addition in that - a better fact that needs to be highlighted is that instead of trying to use the Close at the Title Bar, it's more convenient to right-click the icon on the Task Bar (or Sys Tray) >>----> Quit Skype.

Hm... Well I love Skype just the basic-rough-around-the-edges that it is. The transition for me was simple. I had forwarded my MSN contacts to the Google Talk client (people who know it, also know that it's the most basic thing in existence :D), but Skype's encryption screwed that up. I downloaded it, logged in with the account, and now I have both Skype and MSN, in a client much better than MSN! I'm actually more satisfied with it, if that's possible. :D

Since Gtalk client basically has no emoticons, this is a maaaaajor upgrade. The world of custom MSN emoticon icons is a bygone era for me, never saw them. As far as the e-mails, I actually made a Live account with gmail. :D

I do see how all this is a step-down for people who actually used everything MSN had to offer. I have always wanted it to take a step down, that's why I now use it. xD

That being said, Ad Muncher doesn't block the adds in the bottom of the contacts list, which I really hate. Is there a way to achieve this? I also really hate the live:Name prefix, it's really annoying. I also need the sleek design of the Compact view. Other than that, I can't remember what else could I possibly need, except for a way to merge my gmail chat into Skype. Since they are competitors, ain't gonna happen. :(

As for all you guys with problems, Miranda should be a really good solution. It's supposed to be really powerful. They might have even added custom emo support by now. That's sadly, the only helpful thing I can contribute. :dunno:

3rd party IMs will stop working (on Live network) after some time.

If memory serves right, a Skype protocol was under-way... Anyways, you guys should swing by the support forum, I'm certain that some geniuses over there will manage something sooner or later.

And hey, maybe someone will be able to hack the Chinese version (the only designated WLM)?
