We have posted up data showing the market share of Windows 8 from Net Applications as well as from the Steam PC game download service in the past several months. However, what does StatCounter, which says it takes its information from three million websites, have to indicate about the adoption of Windows 8?

As it turns out, it seems to agree mostly with Net Application's findings, even though the two sites have some very different methods of acquiring and examining their data. The latest numbers from StatCounter show that for the week of March 17th, Windows 8 is currently installed on 3.77 percent of all PCs. That's a slight rise compared to the first week of 2013, when StatCounter showed that Windows 8 was used by 2.34 percent of all PCs.

In this week's numbers, Windows 8 is just behind Apple's iOS operating system which has 3.92 percent. Windows 7 is still the most used operating system worldwide with a whopping 52 percent, followed by Windows XP with 23.86 percent. Microsoft is set to end official support for Windows XP in just over a year from now, on April 8, 2014.

OS X is next with 7.72 percent and Windows Vista is show with 6.11 percent of the market share; Android is shown as well behind even Windows 8 at 1.07 percent.

I have to disagree with you Lyon (although I LOVE the cat!). I will say that Metro on the desktop is indeed horrid, but one can easily unlock the normal desktop hidden in the registry with StartisBack. With that big change, Win8 is very nice. I especially love the startup and shutdown performance when coupled with an SSD. On my computer adding up the time from PowerOn to Desktop then hitting the shutdown button to full power off is 22-23 seconds combined. Very efficient coding!

There are a number of other nifty features to be had also. So changing from Win7, maybe, maybe not; but for those still on XP Win8 is a very big step up.

Even if one keeps aside modern UI & start menu disdain. for me 2 most important reasons to revert back to win 7 was

1. Lack of Aero glass which makes win 8 pretty ugly looking (Semi transparent taskbar sticks out as a sore thumb to the eyes) and all the boring flat surfaces with no gradients, glow and few special effects

2. Notifications which un-invitingly pop out in modern interface which irritated me like anything. Even while configuring a new network connection, one had to click on the modern UI bar on the right side to disconnect (in win 7 one had to just right click for the disconnect/disable option).

So no matter how much you configure or tweak win 8, one cannot change the DNA (which is designed for touch interface) of it.
