Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 SP1 will begin rolling out to consumers via Windows Update starting tomorrow. Windows 7 SP1 is over two years old and if you haven’t upgraded by now, Microsoft will do you a favor and apply it to your machine for you.

Not all PCs running Windows 7 RTM (RTM will no longer be supported after April 9th, 2013) will receive the update as those machines that are managed by a Microsoft management tool such as Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or WSUS Server will be able to void SP1 if necessary.

Seeing that SP1 includes many security enhancements and general bug fixes for the OS, it’s hard to find a reason why the average consumer would not want the update on their machine.

The rollout, like all other large updates from Microsoft, will be released gradually over the coming weeks and you should be prepared for the update to take a bit of time to install.

If you do not currently have SP1 installed, be on the lookout in the near future as Microsoft is about to install it on your machine to make sure you have the latest goods to keep your computer running smoothly.

This update only applies to Windows 7 consumer PCs that are not managed by a Microsoft management tool such as Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or WSUS Server. SCCM and WSUS administrators still have full control over the release of Service Pack 1. This remains unchanged.

As mentioned by Stephen Rose here on the Springboard Series Blog - Windows 7 RTM (with no service pack) will no longer be supported as of April 9th, 2013.

If you have any issues with the installation of Windows 7 SP1 through Windows Update, please visit this support page on Windows.com or our Microsoft Community forum for Windows 7.

Added original article (NeoWin) and re-hosted the image to Imgur as NeoWin doesn't allow hotlinking. ;)

One of the few Microsoft's actions I don't mind. :dunno:

Good thinking on the image part :)

It's good to know that MS is actually doing this because alot of people are just simply ignorant to install security updates themselves... SP1 resolves alot of this stupidity ;)

Unless there's a compatibility issue between your PC and a specific software(s), why would you NOT upgrade to SP1.......

this part most annoy me , does Rtm loose support faster / earlier than lets say retail version ??

RTM is the "Release To Manufacturing" version. That's the original released version of the product. All retail and volume versions originally released are referred to as RTM.

That version losing support means both the originally released retail and volume versions will no longer be supported after the designated date. SP1 versions of both however will be :)

In short, it's not RTM vs. Retail. It's RTM vs. Beta and Volume vs. Retail ;)

I just downloaded I believe over a year ago 7 pro eng sp1 burnt it to disk and did a reinstall upgrade from desk top.

I still believe people that don't pass a simple test should not be allowed to use computers and the internet if they can't be arsed to keep their system

up-to-date.

It's not hard at all!

Yep its not all that hard... I agree... people should ALWAYS keep the latest patches installed irregardless of which version of Windows they may be using... its like more important than one may think... I guess they think "Oh I'm safe bro! I don't need no damn Windows Patches and Updates!!" and so on.... please tell me another horror story :D

... I agree...

Most people have double digit or low triple digit IQ. That makes them less inquisitive by nature :( Hence, they couldn't care less 'bout tech ;)

I bet a lot of people look at us and think "OMG! Those people shouldn't be allowed to walk out in those clothes or that hairdo" :P The lesson? To each their own. Judge not lest ye be judged :P
