Google has announced that Andy Rubin will no longer be leading the Android team at Google and that Sundar Pichai will be taking his position and it appears the move was voluntary.

Google has announced that Andy Rubin will no longer be leading the Android team at Google and that Sundar Pichai will be taking his position.

The post, penned by Google’s CEO, Larry Page, highlights the tremendous job that Andy has done to build Android up to what it is today. In short, saying that Andy has done a fantastic job of building up the platform and exceeding internal expectations, but he (Andy) has decided to hand over control of the platform.

Rubin will be replaced by Pichai who is currently the Vice President of the Chrome business unit for Google.

No word on what Andy will be doing at Google but the post makes it seem that he will take on a new role at the company. In addition, Page praised Rubin for his hard work and said he is a “really hard act to follow”.

Seeing that Android is the dominant mobile os out in the market with the largest market share, we can’t fathom that Rubin was ousted for poor performance. In addition, the fact that he is staying at Google further contributes that this was a mutual agreement to turn the keys over to Pichai.
