Samsung: Windows 8's no better than Vista

With Windows 8 doing little to spark laptop sales, you can hear the grousing of PC makers get louder.

The latest complaints come from Jun Dong-Soo, president of Samsung's memory chip division, who had no kind words for Windows 8 during a meeting with reporters in Seoul.

"The global PC industry is steadily shrinking despite the launch of Windows 8," he said Friday, according to Korea Times. "I think the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform."

Jun's statements echo findings by IDC and Gartner, who found that PC sales declined during the holiday shopping season. Jun added that Microsoft's Surface has seen "lackluster demand," and that demands for thinner Ultrabooks by Microsoft and Intel failed "mostly because of the less-competitive Windows platform."

Samsung isn't the first company to have an executive publicly complain about Windows 8. In January, Acer President Jim Wong said that "Windows 8 itself is still not successful," noting that the market had not returned to growth after the new OS launched.

Wong was more encouraged by the growth of Acer's Chromebooks, the latest of which launched in late 2012.

Meanwhile, HP, the world's number one PC maker, is exploring other options beyond Windows. The company released its first Chromebook in February, and will ship its first Android tablet in April. (HP hasn't dissed Windows 8 publicly, but hardware boss Todd Bradley did fling a few insults at Microsoft's Surface RT and Windows RT in November.)

Little compelling hardware for Win 8?

It does seem disingenuous for PC makers to pin the blame solely on Microsoft's operating system, as if the hardware is without fault. So far, PC makers haven't put forth much in the way of compelling Windows 8 hybrids and convertibles, and the ones that did launch late last year were in short supply.

There's evidence that people are interested in touch-based Windows 8 machines—Asus admitted as much this week, even as the company said overall Windows 8 acceptance was low—but the selection needs improvement.

It's possible that next-generation processors from Intel and AMD, along with refinements to the Windows software in an update codenamed Windows Blue, could make for a healthy second wave of software.

Microsoft is also rumored to slash licensing costs for small, touch-based laptops and hybrids, which could improve Windows 8's chances on the low end of the market. Maybe that's what PC makers are hoping to accomplish with their public grumblings.

Really, I don't know what Microsoft's goal is - to save the PC industry, or to put the final nail in it's coffin. <_<

Maybe we all should downgrade to Windows 7 that have Windows 8 on their machines... but then again maybe not... its hard to tell what to do!

This is what happens when you tell the customer what they want rather than the other way around..

Ah, here's another corporate n00b who has no idea on how to configure Windows 8. :)

I honestly think you're right, but the statement is still true in a way.

BUT here is a funny thing, for me Vista actually worked great, so for me, Vista is better than W8. xD

What the n00b said is true only for those who do not / cannot enhance Windows 8 - unfortunately, that also includes those who do not have the time and / or inclination to carry out those enhancements.

It all depends on which category you belong to - I respect it and have stopped blaming people's failings, any longer.

I'm very clear why his statement is false - for me, I know where Jun Dong-Soo comes from (you'll find him within my spoiler in my signature.) :)

Haha, I like your spoiler a lot, it's a very elaborate list. :P

He he, you'll find my Customers in that list - all of them. None of them had any liking for Windows 8, initially - however, they find my Windows 8 configuration makes their systems look exactly like the familiar Windows 7 with a much more seamless and robust delivery on performance. :showoff:

Today, most of them are on the verge of getting all the rest of their system converted from Windows 7 to Windows 8 - after using it over the last 3 to 4 months, they wont settle for anything else, now. :)

HP cant really complain, they bowed to Microsoft by not allowing downgrade rights for anyone buying a new PC with Windows 8 on it.

Windows 8 is the problem, but they hog tied themselves with the downgrade rights issue.

As an aside, Chromebook isnt the answer either. Why people would want one of those things, when we have spent years getting data gathering in the OS out, or at least more transparent, only to volunteer to have more of your data mined....ridiculous.

BTW, apart from having an incompetent ass for their President, Samsung has a conflict of interest in trying to make that asinine statement (on the title) - they simply cannot manage with Windows 8 and it's UEFI environment.

The reason - well, under UEFI, Samsung hardware gets bricked due to a fault entirely of their own making (check out the source, too):-

UPDATE: One reader pointed us to a post by Linux developer Matthew Garrett, who notes that "Samsung apparently changed their platform interface when they moved to UEFI, but didn't actually do anything to prevent old drivers from breaking things." The good news is "some of the machines that are affected by this predate Secure Boot, so at least it's not a Secure Boot bug."

Source:

Edit:

To find some more asses like Jun Dong-Soo, all are welcome to refer to the spoiler in my signature (as long as they don't find themselves there, too.)

BTW, it's not only HP that has capitulated - it's ridiculous to be ignorant of the fact that nearly every pre-installed Windows OS is now Windows 8 (therefore, the clear choices before one is; either be content in whatever OS is presently installed or learn how to use the latest ones.)

Windows 7 will be "The new XP" :D Cuz Windows 8 is piece of :shit: :shit:

Didn't you know that? :o

Windows 7 is already the new XP - FYI, they booted it out of all new laptops (check fl0ppy's new pre-installed OS at the ShoutBox.)

BTW, congrats Lyon - I discovered a new word for my spoiler . . . . . . . . ShitLess (full credits to you.)

I have been using windows 8 for more than 3 months already and I have not encountered any problem. The operating system is faster than windows 7 and that is on a hp compaq presario v3000 model -- more than 6 years old with 2 g memory and an intel dual core processor of only 1.83 ghz and a display adapter intel 845g. Even without startisback, the operating system is topnotch typing only the command you want on the start screen. Why then is this hullabaloo against the OS? But, of course, the rumor about windows blue returning the start button is a most welcome news if true.

Just as people know, there's a bigger background to this story. Samsung, just a couple of days ago, had to massively decrease the production of Windows tablets and probably notebooks too due to serious lack of demand for them, so much so, that Samsung are going to stop selling Windows products in some regions (example Germany).

Conley Powell

This puts me in a small minority, but I hate Windows 7. The computer I'm using now came with 7 installed, and I used it for about a year, so I can't be accused of not giving it a fair trial. I made several attempts to use XP in a virtual machine, but the results were never satisfactory. Finally I wiped the disk and installed XP. I had none of the driver problems that I'd been warned about.

I haven't tried 8, and see no reason to bother. I plan to use XP until something better comes along. So what if Microsoft "support" will end next year? Who needs it? I've installed none of the post-SP3 "security updates", and I've had no security problems at all. What is security software for, anyway?

Find something else to talk about besides all this meaningless mindgrinding crap over win 8 vs win 7 vs XP vs who cares. Use your mind for something that matters, like actually thinking for yourself.

They have a pretty decent Series 7 laptop that has NVIDIA GPU in it... Best Buy sells it here in the US.... view it @ http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Series+7+15.6%22+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive+-+Titan+Silver/6774657.p?id=1218806576740&skuId=6774657 (They also have a 17" version of it but I don't think many stores exactly carry this one in stock, may be special order version)
