The secret to buying a good HDMI cable: They're all good

Sean asked me what he should know before buying HDMI cables.

There's nothing complicated about buying the right HDMI cable. If it's long enough and not damaged, it will work.

But the people selling the cables may not want you to know that. The more worried you are about buying the right cable, the more likely you'll spend more money.

HDMI has become the default audio-video cable standard for good reason: It sends the best quality image and sound over a single cable with a moderately small connector. And even though there are multiple versions of HDMI, the cables themselves are universally backward- and forward-compatible.

Yet the various versions can be confusing and intimidating. For instance, you've probably heard that 3D Blu-rays require HDMI 1.4. Your 3D Blu-ray player and your 3D HDTV both support HDMI 1.4. But if you're daisy-chaining a receiver between the two, you'd better make sure that that receiver also supports HDMI 1.4.

Despite all that, you don't have to worry about buying HDMI 1.4 cables. Every HDMI cable you can buy supports all of the standard's versions. In fact, HDMI Licensing, the organization that controls the trademark, doesn't currently allow manufacturers to put version numbers on their cables.

And here's two other concerns you don't have to worry about: price and brand names. Cheap, generic HDMI cables provide just as good an image and sound as the high-priced alternatives. In an analog world, cable quality matters; in a digital one, not so much. For more on that, see Technology's Biggest Myths.

blah, blah, blad above plus in addition to that

a. if you have a LED/LCD/OLED TV that supports 3D be sure to purchase the HDMI 1.4.

The price difference is very small. 3 meters HDMI 1.3 cost is $5 vs 3 meters HDMI 1.4 cost is $6.25

I was looking for a 5 mtr HDMI 1.4 but they ran out of stock but as far as I can remember the cost is less than $10.

b.You do not necessarily need to purchase an audio cable if you connect you laptop to your LED/LCD TV if you do not have an amplifier (a home entertainment system with sound box, subwoofer). The HDMI cable will transmit sound to your tv as well just put it in mid/high volume. Also, try to adjust the volume(and equalizer) in you (vlc media) video player in your laptop.

You will need an audio cable if you hook your laptop to your TV using HDMI and use your entertainment system as your amplifier using a digital audio cable (2 RCA to 1). In this case the laptop headphone is connected to your amplifier.

c. You may need to purchase an digital audio cable(2 RCA to 1) if you are hooking your TV to your amplifier (home entertainment system that sometimes is also a DVD/blueray player too). The audio cable is attach to the headphone output plug of you tv and will be attach to the audio L/R connectors.

d. Do not buy HDMI if your home entertainment system has an optical connectors buy and connect using the optical instead pair it with digital audio cable(2 RCA to 1). (I do not know if that is the exact term) This is if you do not plan to use HDMI to connect your laptop to your TV.

e. The HDMI or digital audio cable comes in silver or gold connectors. The posts that I read from another forum was that there was no difference in transmission and the only advantage was their longevity. But as I have tested there are some components which only accepts the gold connectors. On HDMI the gold connectors is not a must but on digital audio connectors you better be buying the gold one as they are almost the same price as the silver one. Remember that they should be cheap. Expensive ones are nothing but a payout for a brandname.

Those gold plated HDMI cables were the biggest myth a few years back. Still don't know why even geeks keep falling for it. If anything, Au is a poorer conductor than Al and certainly Cu :o

Yep 99p from Amazon work great.

Yep! Rs. 60 ($1.15) Chinese ones with Copper connectors work absolutely fine
