Windows 9 to be released November 2014 ?

We do not know a lot about the operating system that is coming after Windows 8. It has been rumored for a while that Microsoft wants to reduce the time span between operating system releases considerable, and one of the technologies that got mentioned in this regard over and over again is Windows Blue.

As it stands now, Windows Blue does not seem to be Windows 9, and while none of this has been confirmed officially, it appears as if we are going to see a release of Windows Blue this year. It is interesting to note that Microsoft is keeping the tight-lipped approach about future products after the departure of Steve Sinofsky.

If rumors turn out to be true, Windows Blue will be a free update for Windows 8 users coming this August. Information about Windows Blue were posted on a Chinese forum. The main points posted there are:

No major UI changes, which means no start menu, no changes to start screen / desktop interface.

Lower power consumption.

Better performance, downsized Kernel.

Scaling improved for Metro apps

Multi-screen applications.

If you take this into account, it looks more like a service pack then a new version of Windows. Instead of releasing service packs, Microsoft seems to move towards a system that is similar to Apples release schedule.

Today news about Windows 9 were posted on Soft-forum that suggest the following timeline for the operating system:

7 January 2014 Windows 9 Beta

July 2014 Windows 9 Release Candidate

October 2014 Windows 9 RTM

November 2014: Windows 9 Release

It needs to be noted that this has not been confirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt until it is. If true, it would confirm the faster deployment of operating systems as Windows 9 would be released only 2 years and 1 month after Windows 8.

What strikes me as odd is that there is only one month between the Windows 9 RTM and the public availability of the operating system.

With Windows Blue being released in 2013, it could very well mean that we will see a new version of Windows being released each year from now one.

Based on all the rumors currently in circulation, it seems as if Windows Blue will be more like a service pack type of update for Windows 8, while Windows 9 may introduce major changes to the system instead.

Windows 8 actually slipped in a mini service pack (which most people did not notice) that resolved a draconian issue.

As you mention your signature... Your list in the spoiler is missing the lazy dudes, like me :D

No way I'm gonna use Win8 in the near future because I would need to change everything to my liking, but that would cost time and effort and Win8 is just not worth it :D

The next OS they better make the interface optional. If they are going to make something that is almost unusable on a mouse and keyboard, why not have it detect if a touch screen is present before giving you a non optimal interface. If you plug a mouse in it should create a popup that asks you if you want to switch to desktop only mode, or any other interface you may wish to use even if it's custom.

I still think the best UI ever would be an interface that adapts to how you use it. If you can't find something there should be a help box accessaable from anywhere which you can ask it, then it should remember that and give you place where you can access it again later without asking again, then allow you to drag and drop it (the feature) to any part of the interface you like. If you are still having trouble doing something specfic then there should be access to cusom scripts and other things people have written, or make your own with an easy to use interface with premade scripts and functions then add it anywhere you like.

Thats what always drives me mad with operating systems, the lack of customisability, if you want to create a shortcut that opens two things at once why not let you. If you want to add your own custom icon on a menu or toolbar that does something like opening a file in a program with specific arguments let you, then let any user incorporate any feature they like in a touch interface if they want it. The lack of basic functions like tabbed windows and the ability to get folder lists (size, file count) within the folder list view shows how crap explorer really is. Why not let you group windows from different processes together in a tabbed interface that would be useful. Those are just some ideas on how to improve something, you don't improve something by removing or hiding it behind layers of crap.

Meh, if it still has Metro (and it's Metro, not Modern User Interface as MS has decided to call it for some BS reason) I'm skipping it. I use a mouse and keyboard and am never planning on getting touch capabilities for my PC. If I wanted touch I'd get a tablet (don't even get me started about those oversized phones that can't even make calls), but I don't so I won't.

The 1 month from RTM to public availability might mean that it'll be DL only.
