rudrax
This virut disguises itself as one of the running processes and gets itself into an external drive if connected. If I manage to make the bootable USB without any suspicious files in it - will it be safe?I'm coming tomorrow morning.

dcs18
If you can procure a CD/DVD ROM (even an external USB one) for the time being, it would save you a lot of steps in the procedure - as mentioned earlier, CDs/DVDs are the only media that cannot be possibly infected. rudrax
Now I'm gonna try a trial install. After installation, I will run McAfee Stinger to verify infection. And that is win32:virut, so, will it infect 64 bit system files?I'll be back after reformat

You have a pretty good experience with it - so you gotta suggest one for me. I'm looking for a AV which is:Low on resourcesDoesn't have any conflicts with x64 bit windows 8As I'm not gonna buy one, so <snip> <snip> <snip>Best class protection

However, the only AV that I can really help you out, with authority is NOD32 EAV as I beta-test for them. The latest V7 does not hand-hold well, though with Windows 8 (x64-bit) - I'm right now running the V6. rudrax
If it's clean, use the following topic - I personally prefer Skype for telephonic offline activations:-Will the skype method work for me? I mean, as you know I have a slow dial up connection. Please, provide me a direct download link for skype. I went to its website but can't download from there - don't know why! dcs18
If you don't use Skype, you don't need to download / install it - just make a request by providing them your Installation ID at that thread (with the last group of characters of the specific product-key used) and those folks will do the needful on your behalf via PM.Edit:-tezza - you beat me to it. :)

If there are some necessary specific tweaks then please specify them.As I have entered IDM host entries so I guess it is necessary to make it read-only. dcs18
Yeah, I already have installed Windows 8 manager and ran the 1-click cleaner once. For Windows 8, I'd suggest using Windows 8 Manager only and only as a Tweaker - for cleaning purposes, I'd prefer a standalone privacy tool like (for example) CCleaner. Same philosophy applies to all other modules of Windows 8 Manager.Success on Windows 8 calls for a careful Worker - one can't be flirting with her (she very unforgiving as an OS - if you decided to re-marry Virut, she would prevent you from booting.)If there are some necessary specific tweaks then please specify them. The boys are planning a long drive out of the city - I might be incognito over the weekend starting tonight (should be back by Monday - first half.)Shall detail stuff to be disabled that make for a pleasurable co-existence with Windows 8 - damn those tutorials that I destroyed. :(
rudrax
Yeah, damn on you. Now get yourself roasted on the fire of lamentation. The Windows Defender in windows 8 is a serious sam. Good enough to protect system without any 3rd party, I guess.
dcs18
The Windows Defender in windows 8 is a serious sam.Your ESET possesses anti-spyware capabilities - that calls for Windows Defender to be disabled (if it's not yet.)
