nsane.forums
Sony's PlayStation 4 launch last Wednesday was monumental, and not just because it may very well be the first console announcement in history where the company failed to actually show the console itself. While the rest of the world was bemoaning the mythical, missing hardware, Sony also announced some basic high-level hardware specifications for the impending machine. Hidden within the technical jargon was a secret: This so-called console is in fact a full-blown x86 PC at its multicored core. More interestingly, the specs indicate that unlike its predecessor—which was an absolute beast when it launched seven years back—the PlayStation 4 will likely lag behind cutting-edge gaming PCs from the very first day it hits the streets. That's not exactly a surprise. "If you predict how hardware evolves at the current speed of evolution, and then take consumer pricing evolution, already two years ago you could see [that] whatever [console] launches in 2013 or 2014 or 2015 will never beat a PC again," Crytek head Cevat Yerli recently told Eurogamer. Sony just proved Yerli correct. Should gamers on either side of the console/PC divide be worried? Article continued at source link below... MidnightDistortions
lol hasn't this always been a problem? Consoles do take time to design and be built, really they should consider a solid design and simply upgrade the components like a PC.
Marik
it will even have 8GB DDR5 Ram.... >ohmypenis.png well comparing it to the pc....but which kind of pc, cause if you were to buy the latest high-end desktop, it would surely surpass the PS4
alaindc
if i remember correctly...the PS3 wasn't an absolute beast at his release. The Cell was a beast for calculing things like for Folding@Home, but the graphic card wasn't.They use graphic card release two years before on the pc. GDDR5.GDDR5 = DDR3 (relatively speaking). All the current (past too) graphics card come with GDDR5. The only difference is, PS4 will use it also as the system RAM, not just graphics card RAM.if i remember correctly...the PS3 wasn't an absolute beast at his release. The Cell was a beast for calculing things like for Folding@Home, but the graphic card wasn't.They use graphic card release two years before on the pc.And see what was happening. The graphics, etc. part wasn't moving forward as it should.
LeetPirate
The problem with the ps3 had little to do with the gpu capabilities, developers had a hard time coding games for the ps3. Most of them took the bare minimum lazy way out. When I see any ps3 game compared to a sony built flagship title there is a huge difference in game quality. It was the same for every playstation, developers never bothered to use the full potential of the console hardware except games built by sony. PS4 using x86 just makes it easier for programmers to get better ports to PC platform, which is great for gamers and developers. Consoles can still do more than a high end PC because PC gaming has to go through DirectX whereas consoles are dedicated to media rendering so even though the console may not have the highest end GPU as compared to a PC, the console could still do more. In the end the PS4 using x86 hardware is the best choice. I was wondering if they would have used ARM or x86.

LeetPirate
Trying to understand a little. Was PS3 made of an ARM like processor?Nah ps3 is Cell processor/ RSX gpu. But due to the growth and popularity of ARM based tablets and phones the ARM has proven to be a formidable processor for gaming so I was expecting that it would be a contender for the next gen consoles. Not to mention the IBM cell processor cost so much that the sony made a loss on every console they sold for a number of years; in contrast the ARM processor is cheaper. I never thought they would go x86 but seeing that they did I think the future of gaming on all platforms will improve for gamers and for developers. I want to believe that developers will be able to have quicker releases and they will actually be able to release better quality ports without pushing back deadlines. I am hoping that will change though since i do prefer PC gaming over console.
