Windows Blue to bring a faster kernel and better search

More information regarding Windows Blue has surfaced, elaborating on the kernel changes made to the OS, as well as detailing search improvements and a release schedule for the update.

Yesterday we saw some more screenshots of Windows Blue, and information surfaced about a planned public Milestone Preview version that's replacing Milestone 2 in the development cycle of the update. Now, again thanks to Win8China, more information has come to light about what we can expect in Windows Blue, and when we can expect it.

The Milestone Preview will come with the previously reported update to the kernel, bringing the version to 6.3 alongside several improvements. Reports say the kernel will be more deeply optimized, allowing for faster boot times, a smaller disk footprint and better power consumption; however, the actual UI will not be significantly altered compared to Windows 8.

Scaling of Modern UI apps will be improved as well with Windows Blue, likely to accommodate smaller tablets in the 7-8 inch range, although the changes could also help those with higher-resolution displays. The Verge also has information that claims search will be greatly improved in Blue, with the Bing team working to add new features to the Charm: this includes the possibility to have search recommend apps to play content such as videos, and also deep search of app content outside of the app.

If these rumors are to be believed, we should be expecting the Milestone Preview in the coming months, with an RTM phase to start in June followed by general availability in August. The update will reportedly be free for all current Windows 8 users, and it will be bundled into all new Windows products following the launch of Blue.

@dcs18: Windows 8 was as rumoured as Windows Blue. Why not oppose it that point of time? I'm saying this cause, one, the source of the news is known and trusted source (AFAIK), two, day by day, more proofs are coming out, and three, more indications have come forward that strongly suggest that it's an service pack in the name of new version.

@ DKT

Microsoft Office 2007 Blue was also as rumored just as Windows Blue is - in fact, download links attributed to it continue to exist (so, that argument does not hold water.) Also I'm not opposing it - am just amused and find the Proponents deplorable (being kind, here.)

Personally, nothing but facts would impress me (not sheep mentality) - I prefer discussing things that are in the realm of existence (should Windows Blue turn out to come true, I'd be the happiest and probably the first one to attempt a conquest unlike so many others who have accepted defeat, by Windows 8.)

Also, what I'm looking for by way of proof is just a simple Microsoft link - ATM, have already prepared myself to migrate from Windows 8 to whatever beckons at version level next.

After all these years I still don't get you :s

Anyways I'm all for a faster more refined version of Vista(NT 6.x) with that Metro crap as long as they don't kill the legacy x86-64 stuff aka desktop apps <_<

Metro is absolute crap, no questions about it - it's quite surmountable though, provided the Individual is determined and optimistic. ;)

There is one way to partially circumvent metro that I know of ~ run windows explorer shell elevated which in turn prevents metro apps from being launched, so you can prevent metro apps from running & a third party start menu will take care of the rest

@dcs18: Fair enough. :)

For me, most of the Windows Blue news is true.

@R0H1T: Microsoft might be planning to kill "legacy" apps. All the crappy Metro lovers are also giving them that bad idea.

If they do, then they can also plan to kill their desktop windows marketshare.

No company will use "apps" (in their current form) for work.

I am not a "lover" of metro, but I do like the concept of having all my pertinent information in one location.

This will definitely kill the traditional desktop as we know it, not gonna happen with WinBlu though !

I dunno where you got that impression from ?

Strong indications. Microsoft executives have mentioned in already in past, that the desktop is kept there so that people can adjust to the transition. It won't happen in Windows Blue, but it might be strongly be considered in Windows 9.

I think Windows 8 was only ever intended as a quick fix for tablets so they could retain some market share from Google and Apple, but then they made the mistake of making an x86 version for desktops when it was not ready.

Sure Windows Start UI can work along side the desktop, but not they way they implemented it. Really shocking for a company of Microsoft size to be churning out crap without testing it with their customers.

As for them banging on about how they are making the kernel better blah blah, what ever happened to their improved file system. NTFS is a total piece of crap now, replace that first.
