CloudFlare vs OutFlare: Malware challenging the cloud

DDoS attacks have become increasingly common over the past years. Note the recent attack on What.CD. Luckily there are services which offer DDoS protection, such as CloudFlare.

CloudFlare's 'Under Attack' mode challenges visitors with a math problem before they are allowed to visit the site. This is not your usual 'human verification' though, it's just a simple Javascript snippet. "The challenge requires the visitor's browser to answer a math problem which takes a bit of time to compute. Once successfully answered, the browser can request a cookie and won't be challenged again."

However OutFlare, a new piece of malware, contained code designed specifically to bypass CloudFlare's security. It finds the Javascript and calculates the answer on its own, allowing a connection to be made to the website.

Read more about how CloudFlare manages to deflect this kind of 'clever' malware in the source article. You should really take some time to look around on their blog by the way, they've got a lot of great posts explaining some basic, and some more advanced, topics about 'the Internet'.
