LG has officially announced its enormous 5.5 inch Android-based smartphone, the Optimus G Pro, which will launch in its native South Korea this week, before going on sale in the US in Q2 2013.

LG announced the Optimus G smartphone in August, and the 4.7 inch smartphone was the first such device to use Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the APQ806. Today, the company announced a much bigger version, the Optimus G Pro.

So, just how big is it? Try a Full HD IPS screen that's 5.5 inch in size and has a resolution of 1920x1080. That's Samsung Galaxy Note territory we are talking about. LG's press release also reveals that the Optimus G Pro will have Qualcomm's newly revealed 1.7GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 600 processor running things inside.

You'll find 2 GB of memory and 32 GB of storage inside this new super-smartphone, along with a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 2.1 megapixel front facing camera. The giant handset, which has the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS inside, also has a few extra software features. LG states:

Dual Recording allows users to capture video with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously for a unique picture-in-picture experience. And VR Panorama allows shots of entire horizontal and vertical environments for a full 360o view. Creative and innovative UX features popular with Optimus G users have been added to the Optimus G Pro, such as an upgraded QSlide, Live Zooming and QuickMemo.

The LG Optimus G Pro will go on sale in the company's native South Korea this week, for the local price of 968,000 won ($897). LG says it will go on sale in North America in the second quarter of 2013, but we suspect that it will be sold with a new two-year contract for a much lower price.
