nsane.forums
In a world exploding with tablets and touchscreens, Microsoft's decision to saddle Windows 8 with the finger-friendly Modern interface formerly known as Metro makes a lot of sense—for Microsoft. But if you're among the majority of Windows users who aren't using a tablet or a touchscreen, the focus on Live Tiles and mobile-centric apps is more of a frustration than a feature. Vexingly, Windows 8 is riddled with sneaky ways to drag you out of the desktop and dump you on that shifting, shiny Start screen. Windows 8 and its controversial interface will come preinstalled on practically every computer sold over the next few years, but fear not! Die-hard desktop jockeys don't have to learn to stop worrying and love the Live Tiles. Here's a step-by-step guide to banishing the Modern interface from your Windows 8 life. Once it's gone, you might just come to appreciate Windows 8 even more than you do Windows 7. I have. Article continued at source link below... dcs18
How to banish Metro from your Windows 8 PC foreverThere are 2 levels of getting rid of Metro (Modern UI) - what's been covered here is the basic level that will merely disable it temporarily, not banish it forever as mentioned in the heading. :)A positive sounding article - but, rather long-winded and low on resources (a nifty little StartIsBack displaces nearly every step underlined on that page.)

RobrPatty
I'm personally going to wait for windows blue as an upgrade for windows 8. Hopefully it will make 8 less buggy.

That is the low of lows you can install an OS on, and it works fine

dcs18
Hasn't anybody noticed something really strange that has never failed to happen!!! :mellow:Take for instance this very thread which is supposed to be on a discussion about banishing Metro from a Windows 8 PC - now, on any number of similar topics, it's become a common sight to find at least a couple of Blokes posting a declaration on why they will not be using Windows 8. :frusty:Don't believe it - please feel welcome to revisit those topics.

Get an install media.2. Insert it into your PC3. Turn on PC and boot from install media.4. Click default installation. Insert your $15 key you got from MS.5. Wait aproximatly 20 - 25 minutes. Let it reboot6. Log in and you are done.7. If you are installing on a netbook, Google search "Windows 8 screen resolution hack" and follow the video/instructions.Less than 45 minutes you are running the latest OS on virtually any PC with atleast 1 Gig of memory
Karlston
So, if Windows 8 had come out with a Start button and no Metro interface, would you guys be installing it or sticking with Windows 7?AFAIK, it's stable and not bug infested like Vista was, and most of the hostility seem aimed at those 2 items I mentioned above. Administrator DKT27 Posted February 20, 2013 Administrator Share Posted February 20, 2013 So, if Windows 8 had come out with a Start button and no Metro interface, would you guys be installing it or sticking with Windows 7?AFAIK, it's stable and not bug infested like Vista was, and most of the hostility seem aimed at those 2 items I mentioned above.90% would have switched blindly then. But that's not the thing. What (sensible) Windows users are asking is, have a bloody option. They can keep Metro if they want, they can totally replace Start Menu if they want, but give us, majority of users, an simple option to select either "Start Menu" or "Start Screen" at the installation, how hard it that? I personally (and probably lots of others) don't care about the Start "Button", something that Microfags (AKA Microsoft fanboys) don't seem to understand. However, it's not as stable nor as bug-free as Windows 7 is though. ;)
ck_kent
Yup, like DKT27 said, just give us the option during install whether it will be used on a desktop or a tablet/touchscreen.

MidnightDistortions
So, if Windows 8 had come out with a Start button and no Metro interface, would you guys be installing it or sticking with Windows 7?AFAIK, it's stable and not bug infested like Vista was, and most of the hostility seem aimed at those 2 items I mentioned above.I probably would have still sticked with Win 7 but i wouldn't mind upgrading given the chance.. but there's other features on 7 that i use that 8 doesn't have, mainly the Windows Media Center.Personally i found nothing wrong with Vista, worked fine just for me, just didn't have enough RAM & i think i had a few viruses on that system but even after reinstalling it, it doesn't seem that bad. Sure there were plenty of bugs on Vista, however the only major one i encountered was the excessive resource hog.
dcs18
. . . . . . . there's other features on 7 that i use that 8 doesn't have, mainly the Windows Media Center.FWIW, the WMC is available to Windows 8 (thank God) only as a add-on - useful only for n00bs. The WMC on Windows 7 is one shade even more low-grade.
