Meteor explodes over Russia, injuring hundreds

Entered atmosphere at 54,000km/h, explodes 30km above Earth's surface.

As everyone was watching a large body called 2012 DA14, which is heading for a close approach to Earth today, a far smaller body exploded in a spectacular fireball over Russia's Ural region. Although it's not yet clear whether any pieces of the meteor survived to land on Earth, the large booms caused by its disintegration shattered glass, resulting in hundreds of injuries, though no reported deaths.

According to the BBC, both the Royal Astronomical Society and the European Space Agency have stated that the explosion and the meteor expected to pass within 18,000km of Earth on Friday are unrelated. The the Russian Academy of Sciences said the rock was about 10 tonnes and entered the atmosphere at about 54,000km/h (about 33,500mph) before breaking up in a spectacular explosion 30km above the Earth's surface. The New York Times reports that a local Russian official is claiming that an impact crater has been identified, which would indicate that a significant piece of the rock remained intact to reach the surface.

Russia Today has collected a series of videos taken in the vicinity of the explosion. Two appear to show the explosion itself, and the remainder of the clips provide a sense of just how significant the explosion was for those on the ground.

UPDATE: Nature News is reporting that the Russian event was the largest in over a century. It quotes an astronomer who's used two infrasound (below the range of human hearing) receivers in the area as part of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty monitoring system to calculate the specifics of the event. Her calculations indicate that the object was 15m across and about 40 tonnes (far larger than the estimate above). The energy released by this object would be hundreds of kilotonnes—a figure that would make the North Koreans green with envy.

i happened to notice 2012 DA14 was coming recently looking for new wallpapers at nasa's web site and they didn't say anything about a smaller one was coming lol

not unusual.. NASA and scientists really don't know much.. a lot less than we think they know and what they do is all mathmatical probabilities, nothing is certain because of too many variables.

i seen something like this in the middle of the night many years ago when i was playing Counter-Strike. all of a sudden it was like noon and bright as day in every window in my house and i though i great there was a nuke that went off or something, i quickly looked outside and it was day time from every view.. turned out it ws just a meteor the size of a volkswagon or washing machine that landed in another country LOL

I live in BC Canada and the Meteor landed in Washington state USA holy crap that IS bright !

I get American TV stations so i seen the same thing i seen on surveilance camera's the next morning and official story details.

Mostly that if its small enough we don't even try and look for them.. if they come they come.. with no warning !

Last year i accidently saw a sattelite crash to earth while standing outside having a smoke that was crazy (it was scheduled and known)

Buckle up for Dec of 2013 ther should be a comet coming that is close enough to put a show on.. it's coming from the Ort cloud.

The most interesting part of this to me is how frequesntly near misses or hits happen with no warning an dthe "experts" can comment afterwards

yet they seem to be so smart at predicting how we're always safe LOL

ya right ..gimme a break ..all it takes is a small variable to throw a comet off course and boom we're dead.

like one of the last major ones that flew by.. everything went fine but when it looped around the sun and started back out it exploded.

If had done that on the way in past us we would have been screwed ! And to this day scientist have no idea way and gave it a HUGE rating

of an explosion it was VERY far and the brighest thing and visible to the eye.. we got lucky VERY very lucky. and their prediction(s)

was once again luck not science.
