Hello Firefox, this is Chrome calling!

Google has announced users of the beta version of its Chrome web browser can now 'talk" to users of a beta of Mozilla's Firefox browser via the WebRTC standard, challenging Microsoft's own standard.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft announced that it used the CU-RTC-Web standard to launch a demo that allowed Windows users of Internet Explorer 10 to video chat with users of the Mac OS X version of Google's Chrome web browser. At the time, Microsoft was a bit critical of another competing web standard, WebRTC, which it said was "far from complete and stable."

Today, Google and Mozilla jointly announced that they have used WebRTC to successfully launch a video chat between the Chrome and Firefox browsers. The efforts were demoed in a video, shown above, which saw Mozilla’s Chief Innovation Officer, Todd Simpson, talking with Google’s Director of Product Management, Hugh Finnan. The chat took place with the Mac versions of those browsers.

The WebRTC standard video chat can be checked out now if you download the desktop Chrome 25 beta and Firefox Nightly for Desktop. Google states, "In Firefox, you'll need to go to 'about:config' and set the 'media.peerconnection.enabled' pref to 'true'. Then head over to the WebRTC demo site and start calling."

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is currently considering both WebRTC and Microsoft's push for CU-RTC-Web but there's no word yet on which direction the W3C might take.

I find it ironic and kind of interesting, that the "Chrome guy" and the "Firefox guy" use each other's browsers, nice gesture though, they both can test and learn the competitions products, something, that without a doubt they do on a regular bases anyway. :P It was interesting, that they both use Macs too. :D A nice and pleasurable video to watch and information to read. I'm sure it comes handy to use this service for a lot of people. :)

Sounds like Google & Mozilla ..both.. are wanting more Mac browser customers & at same time thumbing nose at Microsoft.

doesn't come as a surprise that they're using macs since when the new ff updates come along, they are made available to linux and mac users first with the windows version coming afterwords.

well this will surely put sticks in the wheels of the microsoft machine :tehe:

IE's era is steady coming to an end, it's like a dinosaur waiting for that meteor to drop

chrome and ff are the future and i hope I see the day when the two become one

Don't say that man. :P Both Google's and Mozilla's aims are different. If they become one, they will have to re-write and adjust their aims. It will also kill competition (something that we don't want - days like IE - one browser domination).

i'm perfectly fine with them/it killing the competition, I never cared for IE and i don't fancy Opera so I sure as hell won't miss either of them

Chromozilla :omg:

Chromezilla has a nicer ring to it imo but w/e
