Microsoft has stated that starting February 1, 2013, the Windows 8 upgrade edition will be offered for $119.99 USD and Windows 8 Pro upgrade edition will be offered for $199.99 USD in the U.S.

Windows 8 products will be sold at the following prices:

  • The Windows 8 Pro upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $199.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 upgrade edition will be available online and at retail for $119.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Pro Pack will cost $99.99 MSRP (U.S.).
  • The Windows 8 Media Center Pack will cost $9.99 MSRP (U.S.).

Seeing that Microsoft's promotional price of $39.99 for the upgrade edition of Windows 8, you better act fast if you want to save a bunch of cash before Microsoft pushed the price needle to the far right. We should note too that the Media Center Pack, which Microsoft is currently offering for free, will now set you back $9.99 as well.

We will be quite curious to see how well Windows 8 continues to sell after the price hike goes into place. Seeing that the consumer verdict on the platform at the $39.99 price point was wavering, raising the price to $119 might make it a tough sell for some consumers.

Its a good thing there are other ways ;) I was happy I wasted 3GB of my Bandwidth for 8.

You are happy that you wasted bandwidth? :D It should be, you are happy that you invested bandwidth for Windows 8. :)

EDIT: Seriously though, that price-point is fucked up, even an non-Windows 8 hater won't consider at that price.

You can get core edition at $119? In my days, XP Pro edition used to come at that price. -_- :P

Well, it's a matter of choice, I guess.

In my case, I dual boot my PC with DAZ loader activated Windows 7 U & local KMS activated Windows 8 E on my PC, but I also bought the $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade, just in case other method does not work anymore (most unlikely ;) ).

In my laptop I install Windows 8 Pro with a MAK Key I got from a friend in this forum.

Bargain  Got me thinking about purchasing it cheap again. If you get the cheap $40 deal can you wait and install it whenever?

You can almost get a technet subscription for that price and get 3 keys for win8 pro full not upgrade. And a multiple activation key for win8 enterprise. Also included with subscription is Server 2012 serials.

This is stupid win8 upgrade for $199.

Having said that though, upgrade = full version with the mediabootinstall trick :P

Maybe MS is confused. Maybe they are thinking that the reason that people are not buying W8 is because it is too cheap.

Nah! Even Vista was priced at these abnormally high levels. But at least that came 5 or so years after the highly successful XP. But Win8, coming as it has just the three years after a blockbuster like Win7 and especially when the businesses are still hearting XP with IE6 :o (At least we're on IE8. Thank God for the small mercies :P ) was prolly gonna be a hardsell by itself to those who are still contemplating/continuing their migration to W7.

And as we all realize by now, that their half @$$ed approach towards being a palatable touch OS, to compete with iOS and Android has even alienated their core base - their desktop users. :(

But fear not - the legion of MS loving, Kool-Aid drinking desktop users will in my mind come to thier rescue again and sales will pick up with the Surface Pro especially if the hardware component of it gets a good review with the final product ;) Think of it as a touch device that's compatible with ALL your legacy software that you've paid 100's - maybe 1000's for - all working with an iPad replacement. Suddenly, it seems that you can indeed mix business with pleasure :P

So yeah, this will still be successful enough and in the same way MS envisioned - just don't expect regular consumers and the corporates to join the bandwagon anytime soon ;)

Although, it makes absolutely no difference to a :pirate: how much more/less Microsoft charges for their OS - people seem to be in a delusion, though as to why the pricing is being raised:-

The raise is at the cost of Windows 7 - whether one likes it or not (the funeral preparations are underway.)
