More than one million people have downloaded the Opera browser in the two days since Opera announced it was dropping the ad banner and going completely free.

The download rate doubles the previous record reached in April when the company released Opera 8. According to server logs, a majority of downloads came from Internet Explorer users.

"The success of our free browser proves the world is ready for a fresh option," said a dry and landlocked Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software. "I'm most excited about the hundreds of thousands of new users who have discovered the speed, security and usability of our browser for the first time."

IE is mainly for noobs

Of course <_ i must be a noob then eh cause use it for certain websites not to mention access my routers settings.>

IMO, many users feel that IE is too unsecure due to it's popularity, with many virus writers and hackers concentrating on a browser that the majority of people use.

No browser is 100% safe. There is also the fact that some websites only work / function correctly when being used with IE (to the frustration of other browser users).

At the end of the day, if you use IE and are happy with it - then continue to do so. Having said this, there's always time to give another one a whirl and see if you prefer IE to say Opera, or Firefox. There are pros and cons for all browsers.

I shall add to Sam's comment that:

Firefox was OFFICIALLY last month the most insecure browser on the web! It had the most major security flaws, more than IE.

I can see this trend continueing for atleast the near future. Hopefully we will see firefox (or any alternative browser) being reccomend as a security feature! I still don't know why IE flaws are hyped about 2000 times more than firefox ones.... Must be that the news poster use firefox, sense of false security maybe?

If you know me i'll give what i see as honest, unbiased opinion. Beleive what you like, these are the facts.

The the best security in my mind is an educated mind.

In the attempt to increase its market share, Opera has launched the free version of its browser, which no longer includes ads. Analysts consider that this was possible because the integrated search engines pay Opera a certain fee.

Regardless of the way Opera has decided to offer their application free-of-charge,

it seems that initiative has been successful, users downloading the browser 1.6 million times.

A similar interest was showed a few months ago when Opera introduced the last version which was downloaded in four days by 1 million users.

Opera also announced a partnership with Answer.com and a version of the browser for cell phones.

Before the 8.5 version appeared, Opera has had a market share of 1%. The Norwegian producer hopes that the new free version will allow the browser to beat Firefox, which has a market share of 8.6%.

Wouldn't that be a little too much to hope for...
