Stardock has released version 1.1 of its Start8 Start menu program for Windows 8, adding a number of new features and bug fixes to the program. Stardock has now had 3 million downloads of the program.

Stardock launched the first public beta of its Start8 program for Windows 8 nearly a year ago and it was designed to bring a version of the familiar Start menu UI to the Windows 8 desktop interface. In October, the company released the first commercial version of Start8. Today, Stardock CEO Brad Wardell told Neowin that the program has had 3 million downloads since the commercial launch and that it currently "sells thousands of copies a day."

While the company has released quick updates to Start8 to fix bugs, today Stardock released the first major update to the program since its October commercial launch. Version 1.1 is now available for download at the Start8 website. Some of the new features include adding drag and drop support and the ability to rearrange items inside the "all programs" tree. The new version also adds rename support in the tree.

Version 1.1 of Start8 now allows users who pin folders to the Start menu to view the first X items as a jumplist. You can also open the menu by pressing the Windows key and the X key together. There's also a new way to add new custom location places; a full change log can be read at Stardock's website.

Previous owners of Start8 can now automatically update their version to 1.1. New users can download a free 30 day trial version of Start8 or get the full version now for $4.99.

3,000,000 x 4.99 = 14,970,000 dollars

But, of course, not all the downloaders are buyers.

Yeah, Tihiy says that SiB has been D/L'ed almost 100,000 times (including updates) and only a small fraction of them are buying it. I wonder if the Start8 buyers would change their preference if they knew about Sib. I will stick my neck out to say yes, 'cuz most of them are looking for as authentic an experience to the real thing as possible and as most of us know by now - there cannot be a more authentic Start Menu experience than SiB ;)

P.S. - You know a real geek at heart when you see one. Always solving math problems even when you don't need to :P If only the rest of the world did the same.

3 Softwares I'd buy if I had credit card access and some money in it:

  1. cFosSpeed (cheaper here in India).
  2. StartIsBack (inspite remembering that next version of Windows that may release next year may remove it's functionality).
  3. Portal 2 (Someone gifted me, but I want to payback as I want to pay for this thing from my own money :P ).

Maybe M$ should realise that people want a start menu.

M$ have become such a dictatorship.

I do have windows 8 pro upgrade, however I won't use it till they add a start menu.

I will give it till June, if not done it will be on eBay.

I will be using windows 7 pro x64 till for then on.

I just went to eBay.co.uk and checked out the prices of Windows 8.

I am shocked.

Click here for how cheap they are.

Seems Windows 8 is the new Millennium and Vista.
