AMD is warning users of a security hole in the auto-update notification feature of the Catalyst Control Center for its graphics card drivers on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The company says it plans to remove the functionality early in 2013 because of the vulnerability and suggests that users update to the latest AMD Catalyst driver release by downloading it manually from the amd.com web site. As a workaround, users can disable the automatic check by unchecking the "Automatically check for updates" option found under the Information ➤ Software Update menu entry.

Users can also just choose "Skip" when the Catalyst driver notifies them of an update. AMD gives no further detail of what the vulnerability is, referring to it only as "a minor security vulnerability", a flaw so minor that it is removing the functionality in a future version of the drivers.

LOL! Nothing on my PC checks for auto-updates. Including the drivers for my Sapphire VaporX Radeon HD 5770 :dance2:

But on a more serious note, it'd be nice to know what this 'vulnerability is :dunno:

Hope all other Developers, too do away with the auto-update functionality - it creates hysteria (especially amongst already paranoid Windows 8 Users) about the OS dialing home. :naughty:

Personally makes little to no difference to me - I specialize in customizing each & every of my own software installations . . . . . . . . . . threadbare. :P

It's a necessary evil, I suppose. Most people wouldn't update anything in thing in thier entire lives manually if it was left upto them. They'll just treat their PC's like old TV's that just worked and no one had heard about any firmware updates for TV's back in those days ;)

You talk to your colleagues, classmates, friends, relatives - and 'most all of 'em are surprised to know that software/firmware makers even release updates that fixes reliability and security issues and enhances functionality for their PC's, phones, set-top boxes and what not

Not everybody bother spending time on tech sites. FB, YouTube, Netflix ... are so much cooler, you know :P Not to mention them fashion blogs :o :hehe:

Preaching to the choir, eh? :P

AMD sucks like freaking BUFF..It stopped support for mobility 51xx series..In the release note it is told that they still support 5000 series but when you look into the INF file, there is 54xx in the last supported on the list..So, Mr. AMD you SUCK

Yeah, they do, but at the lower range, they're still the king. If you need something under 5K, the 6670 is still your answer. Similarly priced HTPC cards like the GT430 are terrible at gaming.

I have a 6850 that I really like. It was cheap, and is more than enough for what I throw at it. It just really bugs me that you can't find basic 'drivers' anymore.. Does anyone know if there are barebones drivers out there somewhere?

I really wish Windows had a package manager like Linux distributions do... then instead of downloading and manually updating things you just add the companies repository and security key so you have a centralised way of finding updates for all your software...

As it is now Windows is a pain in the arse updating every single piece of software either manually or using a different auto updater for every single piece of software.... it's a mess, and a security nightmare.

To the best of my knowledge all discrete GPU driver download these days are at least ~100MB if not more. I guess we'll have to bear those PITA downloads. The really depressing thing is - they're not likely to get smaller any time soon
