Yahoo Messenger will lose some important features starting on the 14th of December. These include chat room, calls to landlines, and interoperability with Microsoft's Live Messenger service.

Yahoo has been in a transition period for quite some time trying to get back some of its market and mindshare, and that has occasionally meant cutting things off.

This time it’s Yahoo Messenger’s turn to get a feature trim, and the company has announced on their blog that the once popular messaging service will lose some important features starting December 14th.

First of all Yahoo Messenger will lose interoperability with Microsoft’s Live Messenger. Users will still see their Live friends online but they will not be able to send them messages or interact in any way. This is somewhat of a big deal as the interop was certainly an important feature.

Chat Rooms as well as Voice calls to landlines are also getting cut. Arguably nobody cares about chat rooms anymore, but the Call in and out features were definitely big ones and Yahoo’s answer in the fight with Skype. Users are no longer able to add credit to their accounts and they will get a refund for their remaining balance. Messenger-to-Messenger calls will still be available but it’s pretty clear Yahoo has conceded this fight.

And lastly and probably least important: Pingbox, an embeddable applet developed by Yahoo, will stop functioning after the 14th. Users that have this installed on their websites and blogs will have to disable and delete it.

For more info on the account refunds and how to disable Pingbox be sure to check the source link below. In the meantime let us know: were you YMessenger users or has everyone forgotten it ever existed?

That's sad. I don't use it myself, but lot of my friends use it, and many of my relatives use it. It means I won't be able to talk to them via WLM. :(

Screw the chat room - but, absence of the other 2 would hurt.

Yahoo is a dead company anyway...

But isn't Windows Messenger/The Microsoft Network (MSN) Messenger/Windows Live Messenger being shutdown and shuffled over to Skype anyway... perhaps that is the reason for the cut features...

Yahoo is dead from almost 3-4 years now. M$'s buyout offer was their best chance for survival, now they are doing a suicide by removing the WLM chat feature.

WLM's move to Skype is one part, they could have atleast kept the chat function. Or even better, they are now having (or were having?) good search engine relationship with Microsoft, they could have had themselves asked for Skype audio and video calling API support from Microsoft (with some royalty ofc).

I wouldn't call them important features. Yahoo's chat rooms are mostly filled with porn bots that log your IDs and randomly PM you with porn site links and stuff. As for the loss of the WLM interop that's because of Microsoft discontinuing WLM in favor of Skype.

Yahoo needs to die already.

The most endearing, but unknown (to the masses) propensity of Yahoo! Messenger was the capability of sending anonymous messages (to most protocols) without being traceable. :sneaky:

chat rooms was one and still one of the best way to meet some locals and make friends

Yahoo should have sold everything in their portfolio to M$ a few years ago. With the huge Mexican fine and all the other loses they could become bankrupt.

btw here comes those email chains about click and send to 10 people in order to save yahoo chat rooms. you all remember those fake chains? now they will be real

as bad as walamrt actually giving away to winners $500 gift cards after all these years of fake ones
