There is a rumoured Windows Blue. It is unknown if it's an actual OS, but rumour has it, that Microsoft is already working on it. It is believed that Windows Blue will release in a year.

I still have hard to control urge to go back to Windows 7. :(

I'm not clear if Blue is simply what we in the Windows world typically call a service pack, which is a rollup of fixes and updates.

Or maybe Blue is more of a feature pack, which would/could include be a rollup of fixes plus some new features.

Maybe, maybe not. Nothing can be said as of now. I still think it's will be a big enough update, maybe something like Mac OS, where they have different code names for updates (lion, snow leopard, etc).

While that is a sore point, it really doesn't bother you as much after a while. The real bone of contention for me is that the thing is neither here nor there. Most of the features oscillate between the modern and traditional interfaces and that annoys the hell out of me. You cannot possibly guess or even remember which action is gonna take you away to the other UI :o Why the hell they couldn't implement the features fully this way or that is beyond me

Well that's quite easy to configure - one can simply relegate the Start Screen to the background or even opt to disable it completely in a manner whereby it cannot be accessed (not even by an inadvertent keypress.) In other words, Windows 8 can be made to replicate Windows 7 and more. - my Windows 8 is a Windows 7, on steroid. :D

Try this if you will - Control Panel > All items (small icons) > User Account > Make changes to my account and bam! You're into Metro. But why? :dunno: We didn't need Metro to change our User Account settings in Win7, did we? And all of that seemed to work just fine!

P.S. - If you've disabled Metro completely, you'll get an error message

BTW, that was a copy paste from a previous post of mine on another thread. THIS is the entire post ;)

Also, the number of clicks needed to do stuff has definitely increased significantly. Things that you could do with just a couple of clicks in Win7 now takes 3 to 4. And this happens across the spectrum :mad2:

Since one can easily configure it to an exact likeness of Windows 7 - it takes the same number of clicks, here (for me.)

Not for everybody. I have a not-always-on internet connection. To connect manually, On Win 7, I just needed to double click on the desktop shortcut and voila, I was connected. But here, double clicking on that just brings up the connection panel (Modern UI) from the right side :o And then you'll have to click on 2 more times in order to connect. WTF  Just one case. I can give you many more tbh :mad2:

You'll soon see the transparency and more importantly the 3rd dimension in the Windows 8 GUI.

That happens without excessive resource usage - great! But Stardock has a terrible habit of coming out with laggy, resource heavy programs :(

I totally agree with calguyhunk. Metro showing in desktop doesn't make any sense. I don't know how they decided where and why should metro appear in desktop  And yes, there are many situations now where you have to click more to do the same in Windows 7.

Cheers ;)

It's funny though. I had no idea Windows Blue was back into the news. I just remembered it and posted here about it. Next thing I see The Verge releases an article about it.

For me after reading all these negative reviews about Win8, it was an incentive for me to actually try it, so I bought an upgrade license. I have to say it's not love at first sight, like I had win win7 (even during the betas) but I am starting to like it. I wouldn't go back to win7. I had been using linux for a long time and the transition to more touch device like input happened in linux long before (first with kde4 than with gnome3 and unity) I am not really charmed by this and simple things take many more clicks but compared to kde4 and gnome3, windows8 is not bad. I really wished I had a touch interface because I constantly find myself swiping the screen with win8 with no effect of course.... I really do like the new exporer with ribon, it looks so clean yet is so functional. I also like the new theme, it is much more stylish and elegant than the rather tacky and glossy aero-theme, boot times are amazing (about 10s to desktop), for the first time my bluetooth mouse is working like it should and I actually use many of the metro apps (like email) to quickly check things and then revert to desktop, though I wished they looked more similar because the obliously use a very different layout and theme. I am trying to get by without the startmenu (I tried many replacements) and am not missing it very much (the new powermenu is all I needed and the powermenu is much more powerful than start anyway). Some stupid stuff, why did they hide turn off/restart under settings in charm? It merits its own entry in the charms bar and also under your login in the new start.

That's one of the better ideas about Win8. You're right. :)

BTW, use paragraphs for long posts. Gets tedious after a while ;)

Pass, but only with StartIsBack's (etc.) help. I don't hate Metro per se, but the constant switching with the Desktop is very irritating and frankly ridiculous. I like the stability and especially the speed gain over 7. It is more responsive than 7. As mentioned, refine Metro, set it as optional, fix some quirks and it's a great (and inexpesnive...) OS.
