nsane.forums
An IT company has made a point to alert the media that there are now just 500 days to go before Microsoft officially pulls the plug on its support for the Windows XP OS. Microsoft has made a point to send out reminders to large businesses that still use Windows XP that extended support for the OS will end soon. The company has also tried to offer advice to businesses who want to make the move to Windows 7 or Windows 8. Today, it was a third party, UK-based IT company Camwood, which sent out the latest reminder of Windows XP and its ultimate fate. In a press release, Camwood noted that just 500 days are now left before Microsoft's official support for Windows XP will end on April 8th, 2014. Camwood, naturally, is using this milestone to help promote its own services. However, its press release does make a point. There are estimates that as many as 50 percent of PC desktops in the enterprise market are still running Windows XP, although other numbers put that percentage as much lower. Camwood went on to add: Whatever the true number, there is still a huge number of companies that need to migrate. The end of XP support is a potential time bomb, and the clock is ticking. With all the potential compatibility and security issues looming from legacy systems, businesses need to understand migration is a necessary step to secure their valuable data. It will be interesting to see what the percentage of enterprise PC users is that is still running Windows XP a year from now, and how many made the move to Windows 7 and Windows 8. calguyhunk
LOL! We are still running XP on most of our machines and to the best of my knowledge, there's no plan to upgrade atm especially, 'cuz a large number of PC's are 10-15 year old machines that won't fit the minimum system requirement criterion for Win7/8. A total upgrade will run into millions (tens of crores) including hardware :(
irefay
Cant wait till we can say the same about W8. Permissions errors have plagued my upgrades to W8 from the beginning. Once I got that fixed, I had the pleasure of dealing with installing older software that was incompatible with W8 without a huge amount of effort on my part. Grr. Millions of permission errors. :o Not only that, even going through the whole process of taking control simply doesn't work for sub-folders no matter how much and how many times you try. Win8 just completely ignores the check-box that says "Inherit permission for sub-folders and files" :mad2: It's so bad that I'm considering a full re-install and see if that works. The funny thing is, it wasn't even an upgrade. I've just installed it on another partition and it messed up my perfectly maintained squeaky clean Win7 installation as well

ck_kent
We still run Windows XP on about 95% of the computers because of in-house software that is incompatible with Windows 7. The other 5%, Windows 2000.

However, as per this, the computers connected to the internet, Windows 7 has surpassed XP. Most of it may have to do with OEMs and general assemble makers. But, the scene in the business and non-internet connected computers and people owning computers who have poor wages, may find it impossible to get a new one even in 2015. (like the old.windows folder) http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html Helped fixed the permissions problem. Go through each step. The last 24 hours have been problem free for me after those two fixes. Hope you get the same.
Alanon
Hell, I don't know... 7 and 8 just seem too much for me. Sure, they're prettier, probably more functional, and I presume safer than XP out of the box, but a whole lot of people don't need Aero. Or Windows Defender. Or Metro. I realise 7 has overtaken XP a long time ago, but don't realise why. I have great respect for inovation (let's be honest, MS needed some serious balls to roll out 8 without the Start menu), and in that regard 8 trumps 7. Things that are often mentioned as advantages of Win 7 are Aero, speed, DirectX 10 and 11, "better" network config, "powerful search options ( )", UAC, Firewall... Used to play games a lot, unfortunately, not so much since I started college. I can connect to the internet just as good with XP as I can with 7, and software is there to help me keep me safe. I've tweaked XP to work lightning fast for my now ancient PC, which I would never know how to do as efficiently as on the XP. For me, it will be a sad day when XP goes... I'm actually thinking of using it indefinitely.

cyberber
Its about time the outphase an operating system that was designed for old generation processors with machines that make use of limited ram and don't incorprate modern technologies. Xp was designed for machines around 2003 we are about to enter 2013.

Ganxxta
It will be interesting to see what the percentage of enterprise PC users is that is still running Windows XP (80%, rest already migrated to 7 or Linux) a year from now, and how many made the move to Windows 7 (80% of those 80% mentioned earlier) and Windows 8 (1%: Microsoft and Nokia as MSs b*tch basically) . (15% will still stay on XP even without MS support, 4% will try MacOS/Linux/Unix etc.) My expectations after the extended XP support in bold :D
ffi
Still 500 days until we can say goodbye to this legacy shit :( ? It's about time we moved on and started using our hardware and new API's to the fullest...
Administrator DKT27 Posted November 24, 2012 Administrator Share Posted November 24, 2012 My problem with XP loosing it's support was limited to desktop, until, I came across a age old laptop. I realised that old desktops could still run Windows 7 in low performance, but when it came to laptops, it was impossible.

And they wont invest money just for the sake of having the newest Windows. Its pretty expensive: new Licenses, new Hardware, new software, training for admins, training for staff, training for help desk, time for integration, testing etc...
