Would you people recommend me to upgrade to windows 8 for $14.99? Is it even worth the upgrade?

Firstly, to qualify for the $14.99 upgrade you needed to have bought your copy of Win7 on or after June 2nd this year. I've read about quite a few problems here and on other forums where legit buyers are being refused the cheap upgrade by MS in breach of their stated position :( Go here (US link) to see if you qualify. :)

As for recommendation - My personal opinion is that you should first try out Win8 either in VM or on a separate partition and then decide accordingly. It has been hugely divisive. Some love it, some hate it. Personally, I think it is a huge improvement over Win7 in general, but the new interface that keeps coming back to haunt you probably could be bit of a dampener for some - at least at the beginning ;)

What I like - Super fast. And I mean it's EPIC :P Applications, videos, large documents etc. open much - much - faster than in Win7. Unbelievably fast. It's seen to be believed. And I will say that ad-infinitum :P

With FastBoot enabled, cold boots in under 10 seconds on powerful PC's. I've disabled it 'cuz it was interfering with other OS installations and yet, it takes not more than 20 seconds. The same PC takes 30-40 seconds to cold boot Win7 :o And no, it's not a joke either. Most people with a single OS installed and Fast Boot enabled by default will experience sub 10 second boot-ups on modern PC's

What I loathe - The confused, schizophrenic interchange between Modern UI and the traditional desktop. You never know when you're gonna be shunted from one to the other. You can use one of the several start menu tools to get back your start menu, boot to desktop and reduce those instances, but you cannot entirely do away with it. You'll be dragged back to the "Modern UI" from time to time whether you want it or not even if you only want to use the Win7 type desktop interface. And that's because a lot of the desktop features have been left only partially implemented and bizarrely, some of the traditional links on the control panel etc. take you back to the tiled interface

Not a problem though if you're a fan of Metro/Modern, but then again, you'll be shunted back to desktop mode every time you wanna do something serious LOL! Even MS seems to think that Metro is only for playing around and not for serious business :P

Me neither, but must have been something really nice :rasta: :P

P.S. @ InEVX - Even if you happen to fall in love with Metro, you'll prolly do well to change the file associations to genuine desktop apps (preferably 3rd party) for photos, music, vids etc. 'cuz those featureless, mostly incompatible, obnoxious full-screen "Metro apps" just suck worse than 20 dollar hookers on Hollywood Boulevard on busy nights :uhoh:

Also anyone on a limited bandwidth connection (mostly in the developing world) needs to turn off the live tiles if you do not want your internet bills to skyrocket :( Also, for the uninitiated - You might wanna turn off Smart Screen filter for more reasons than one, but mostly because you don't want MS to track every thing you do. Nor do you want them to come up with dumb@$$ "Windows has just protected your PC" messages every time you download or run a file MS doesn't approve of :spank:

Also if you're multi-booting, either turn off Fast Boot or as a workaround, at least choose Win8 as your default boot so as not to have problems with Win8 obnoxiously believing it has the right to re-write your MBR without your expressed consent :mad2:

Talking about fast boot for Windows 8 is what a majority of people say? .... Rubbish,

If you want fast boot in Windows 7 or XP for that matter do this. A motherboard with a SATA3(6gpbs) connection and a new gen SSD harddrive for boot. 60GB are so cheap these days you can run 2 of them in RAID 0 ..... my benchmarks are 500mb/s read/write in the IO tester. MY PC cold boots in 10 seconds I tell you that.

And you dont even wanna know how fast my applications load up, its ridicilous. I love it :)

SSD + Windows 7 FTW

Mobo - (LGA 1155/AM3+) $50-$500

Compatible processor - $50 (G530) - $320 (3770K)

2x 60GB SATA III SSD drives in RAID - $120

------------------------------------------------

Getting Windows 8 for Free - Priceless.

There are some things money can't buy. For everything else there's Amazon/Newegg/Ebuyer/Flipkart :P :lmao:

My hope is, slightly different topic, that MS will soon decide to fix the GUI of Office 2013 to something that is not so tiring and irritating for the eyes.

Because of this *white crap* idea...I won't upgrade (as thousands others...).

Can't understand it...they work hard for at least three years and produce a really astonishing (as functionality) product...coupled with "let's kill their sight" s**t.

I can guess that coders for MS...likely 80% of them wear spectacles...but I won't join them, just because of this white, total...sorryy, I hate these words - crap!

Too much whiteness is the main reason I haven't switched, inspite of reading good opinions from fellow nsaneforums users.

I'm a rare Office user though.

TBH I feel this forum thread as all the comments I read in Facebook every time they change the interface.. people simply just hate it fut the sake of hating change, plus there is always a stage of transition, where things doesn't work as they are intended.

So there are good things, and bad things. I have been using the RTM version for a couple of months, I work primarly in the desktop, and I like searching in the "start screen". True it take a while to get use to it, but it's not anything from another world. Plus, I love having the 2/3 screen with desktop and 1/3 with the chat windows. (win+. win+d)

Also it seems failry obvious that this was designed with touch in mind, and when you use it with a tablet or a touch screen it makes incredibly more sense. Of course people shouldn't need to buy new hardware to use a new OS.. but in a way they are trying to push new technologies. And at the end of the day it is a business, if people realle hate it so much they won't buy it and either they make it better or they die. So why not just sit down, relax and wait probably less than 12 months for the next release, "Windows Blue" http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-blue-coming-next-year whatever that means...

Anyways I think it is better for MS to focus on fixing the bipolarity disorder of the OS rather than bringing back the, IMHO, irrelevant old start menu.

So after being the devil's advocate I must say, yes the new office 2013 UI is too godamn white!! I miss the dark theme option.
