Valve: Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for gaming

Microsoft has been on the receiving end of a lot of hate from Valve and it looks like that train is not letting up anytime soon as the company has slammed Windows 8 once again in favor of Linux.

While Linux fans will say that next year is finally the year of Linux, it seems that Valve is really hoping that next year, truly is the year of Linux. The company has not been shy about bashing Windows 8 in favor Linux and now they are getting even more aggressive with their tactics.

At a presentation at a Ubuntu developer summit in Denmark, Drew Bliss, an employee of Valve, stated that Linux is more viable than Windows 8 for gaming, according to Ubuntuvibes.com. Bliss is quoted as saying the following too:

  • Steam client is running nicely on Ubuntu and many developers have approached them with good game products.
  • Cooperation with Canonical has been good.
  • Ubuntu is preferred platform as it has a large user base and good community support with a strong company like Canonical behind it.
  • Linux has everything they need: good OpenGL, pulseaudio, OpenAL and input support.
  • New Source engine games will be available for Linux.
  • No firm time frame for Steam Linux release, but soon.
  • Copy protection is up to the game publishers.
The strong words against Microsoft are surely because of the Windows Store which Valve feels is a threat to their own Steam client. While the long term effect of Windows 8 and the open nature of Windows will not be known for some time, Valve certainly feels that it is a step in the wrong direction.

It will be interesting to see if Valve can move consumers to Linux as Steam has a very loyal fanbase but at the same time, Ubuntu is not nearly as polished as Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Okay. Now NeoWin is being the judge. I call it bullsh*t. What threat? Cheap calculators are going to stop Valve? Grow up. I'm already reading negative public views about it.

This guy, Gabe Newell, on the other hand, has worked with Microsoft for 13 years. He has been the producer for atleast 3 Windows versions. What makes them think Valve is angry at Windows 8 only because of MS Store? Are they blind or something?

I don't really know what enrages Gabe so much about windows 8. I love the steam client, and let's face it it is just a app that renders a website that let's you buy stuff. And Actually that is kind of the apps that Metro was made in mind, that is why they have so much support for HTML5 and Javascript. Also I think most , fi not all, of the games that ran in Win7 will run in Win8.. and what is really the difference between clicking a link in the new start menu or in the good "old" desktop. Maybe Gabe is just overreacting. IMHO Steam could still be a winner for Win8 while moving to linux at the same time.

On the other hand maybe this is a push for Windows to improve something it they don't want other companies following Valve's example.

On the bright side this could be the push Linux always need to gain popularity among more casual users. Because please, if you have used Linux, specifically Ubuntu, that shitty thing called Unity (the UI manager) is as horrible as it can be.

It's true that Gabe might be overrating.

When going against, he noted that "people will rage quit" probably aiming at the metro.

But yes, it's a big gaming boost for Linux. Not only because of Steam, but now devs will start considering Linux as Steam is on it. Valve users might consider it by seeing that as per Valve tests, Linux performs better in gaming. Going away from DirectX, OpenGL will be used. Linux will get official drivers, etc.

Linux is okay, if my Left 4 Dead 2 is running faster than or at least the same as in Windows 7 :D
