Lotto 'Glitch' Costs Winner 800K

A computer glitch that stopped thousands of lottery ticket sales this weekend has cost the winner £800,000.

The lucky punter will pocket £3.4 million rather than the £4.2 million previously thought, because of the lost sales.

Camelot apologised after the problem which left players around the country fuming because they were unable to buy tickets.

Regular player Tracey Birchall, 30, a trainee teacher from Bristol, said: "I'm absolutely gutted. What's going on?

"It would have been nice to see in the new year with a lottery win."

Another man attempting to buy a ticket in the same shop had travelled into Bristol from Stroud, not knowing it was a nationwide problem.

"He had come all that way so he was really furious and he was getting seriously annoyed with the shop staff," Mrs Birchall said.

At the beginning of the National Lottery draw show on BBC1 last night, host Carole Machin apologised to viewers.

She said: "Due to a network communication issue this afternoon players may have experienced difficulties buying national lottery tickets in store or via the National Lottery website.

"We would like to apologise to anyone affected."

Camelot said the "network communications issue" had resulted in either slower than normal transactions or retailers being unable to perform transactions at all.

Ticket machines across the country were up and running again at full speed after 6pm, it added.

Hey...here in Canada some guy waited for the very last minute to purchase his lottery tickets. (The cut off time was 9PM) and he began his two ticket purchase at 1 minute before...the first ticket went through for that nights draw...the second ticket went through at 10 seconds past the cut off...the second ticket had the winning numbers for 3.2 million tax free dollars...he in the process of suing the Quebec lottery ...i don't think he will win..... :)

if the machine dated it for that lottery drawing date then it should count. comuter times can easy be a few seconds off. he would most likely win in usa.

Actually ...legally speaking... lottery machines in Canada and the USA have the computer date stamps to avoid people from saying they meant to make there ticket purchases on the previous or the latter draws...this guy would not win his in any country in the world actually.... His only hope is that the lottery corporation will choose to make good press and GIVE him the money despite HIS mistake as he was informed he literally only had seconds to make that nights draw and the clerk did tell him he most likely would not make all his tickets valid for that night...file this under the law of " Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades."

in the usa it should say which lottery drawing it is for. also in the usa if it went to trial a jury likely to award it too. this suit would cost the state lottery a lot of money to fight it
