nsane.forums
Ultra-conservative Russian Orthodox Christians have taken offence over Apple's logo, believing it to be anti-Christian, and replacing the bitten fruit symbol on the company's products with a crucifix. Apple has often found itself being unflatteringly compared to a ‘cult’, with millions of brainwashed followers slavishly devoted to supporting and praising its every move. Of course, this is a gross misrepresentation of a company that simply creates products that many consumers desire and aspire to own, but such sober assessments of Apple’s status never silence the comparisons of the company to a religious institution. Curiously, however, recent developments in Russia depict Apple as anything but divine, as some Russian Orthodox Christians have apparently taken offence over the company’s logo, believing it to be intolerably evocative of the ‘forbidden fruit’ from the Garden of Eden in the Bible’s first book of Genesis. Russia’s Interfax news agency reports that “some Orthodox believers, including priests” have begun obscuring the company’s “anti-Christian” logo on devices that they purchased from Apple, replacing the logo with crucifixes instead. These believers are said to have taken issue with the bitten apple being a potent anti-Christian symbol, supposedly representing the ‘original sin’ committed by Adam and Eve, in which they each ate fruit from the tree that God had forbidden them to touch. Conversely, the cross is said to embody the redemption of mankind from that sin through the death and subsequent resurrection of Christ. Religious community site, Christian Today, pointed to new laws making their way through Russia’s parliament as a possible indication that this state of affairs will only get worse for Apple. Legislation currently under consideration there proposes to crack down on blasphemy and “insults targeting religious, spiritual or national values”, and President Vladimir Putin – who was re-elected this year with extensive and very public support from the Russian Orthodox Church, throughout his campaign – is believed to be a staunch supporter of these new laws. Given the rising prominence and influence of ultra-conservative Orthodox Christians in Russia, it’s claimed that things could get difficult for Apple there, should greater numbers of believers adopt a similiar mentality against the company’s branding. Something tells me they probably wouldn’t see the funny side of making a joke at this point about the ‘Jesus Phone’. calguyhunk
..... i feel sorry for those 2 females punk rock band Pussy Riot rules! :P But actually, that's political censorship & not religious one to the best of my knowledge, but yeah, gagging of free speech nonetheless by whatever name by whoever :nono: now now there might be a russian member in nsane so we need to be neutral :P... But that's 'ultra-conservative orthodox Christians'. Most normal, sane. regular Russian Christians - even the God fearing, Church going ones - are prolly cringing at this kinda' retarded fanaticism  This is the exact kinda' crap that is turning people away from organized religion & these idiots - unfortunately for the vast majority for us - exist in every religion. The religious leaders are just out for publicity to collect more funds for their denominations/institutions by appealing to the basic insecurities of gullible God fearing citizens (which is 90% of society) by brainwashing them 'bout some perceived threat to their culture, religion and/or way of life from some corner or the other ;)
Alanon
I'm Orthodox Christian (though not belonging to the Russian denomination) and all I have to say is I agree completely with Israeli_Eagle and calguyhunk. The Pussy Riot thing, however, I disagree upon. Russia isn't doing anything America or Britain haven't been doing for a long time. The Islamic peoples in France were forbidden to protest in public against the caricature and film. And let's not even mention Guantanamo. The Russians are a very religious people, for the most part, and Orthodoxy is a very important part of their lives (which is why the state delivered a moratorium on the "Pride Parade" for a period of 100 years). The other thing most Russians feel strongly about is being independent, as they have the (correct) feeling that they are one of the worlds great nations. Putin, for better or worse, is the epitome of that strength. When Romney goes on TV saying that Russia is Americas No. 1 geopolitical enemy, it creates a social climate in which even I, a non-russian, can see the wheels turning. And these protesters choose a church for their performance. And then America pulls the all-out propaganda and makes them poster-children for human rights (they recently received an award from Yoko Ono. Come on!!!!). Rest assured, had they done this anywhere in the Western World, they would get much more than two years. And the most horrid of all things is that during this ridiculous spectacle, no-one informed the guardians of human rights that a mentally impaired girl was being accosted with the death penalty for burning certain religious texts in Pakistan.Anyways, I've ranted quite enough. Back on topic, the apple allusion is humorous at best. Those guys are dumb-asses.

calguyhunk
............... I am spiritual, but not religious. :) Exactly. Organized religion and the fanatic hateful bigotry and blind faith, dogma and superstitions that come with it puts me off organized religion. I am more of an Agnostic than anything, but do consider myself spiritual to a large extent. Is it a dichotomy? :P :dunno:
