Best registry cleaner and firewall?

Complex

Recommended Posts

I've finally decided to tidy up my computer a bit, and realized I hadn't cleaned out registry since my last format. I skimmed through the forums and used the search function for "best registry cleaner" but nothing popped up that was very noticeable, unless I overlooked a thread (I'll admit, I skimmed quickly). I'm not sure if there is a "best" (figured it'd be the best title for subject though), but how about a well recommended one?

Same goes for Firewall. At the moment, I'm using Windows Firewall, haven't had any issues with it. (I know, don't fix what's not broken.) Even though things have been just fine, should I move on and get a different firewall and disable Windows', or just keep with it?

I've already looked into the defrag program and decided I'll be going with Ultimate Defrag since that's what people seem to prefer, so it must be good.

Thank you very much in advance for any answers given.

Also, this is my first post on this forum, so I'd also like to thank all of nsane's staff and members who contribute to the community in any way. I'm sure everyone else appreciates all the time and effort everyone puts in. Thank you!

//edit

If I've missed an obvious thread answering my questions, apologies.

Firewall: Comodo or Online Armor

Registry Cleaner: TuneUp 2009 or Advanced System Cleaner v3

Defragmenter: UltimateDefrag

And no, there isn't a best anything. People just say that because that's what they use.

My example of a best antivirus: An antivirus that is capable of detecting and eliminating threats, being able to judge a keygen/patch/crack signature from the real thing (virus/trojan/badware in general).

And when a file is corrupt and has to be deleted (example: a file in the WINDOWS folder), the antivirus has to be able successfully deleted the infected file (without it coming back because you just happen to left system restore on), and then re-download the exact (clean) file it deleted to replace the old one, that way the WINDOWS folder will not be damaged and will stay intact.

Thank you very much for the quick response, appreciate it. I use NOD32 Anti-Virus and have had no problems with it, so I think I'm fine with that, plus a lot of other people seem to prefer / recommend it as well, so it must be a good pick.

I'll look into those programs you recommended for Firewall and Registry Cleaner, then decide from there. Would you happen to know a good spyware / adware remover as well? I had Super AntiSpyware installed up until a little while ago, but it didn't seem to be doing anything for me... I don't know, I could be wrong. I didn't pay it much attention while it sat in system tray.

try Trojan Remover for most of the malware

and as for spyware Spybot Search And Destroy is more than capable of owning most of the anti-spyware programs these days

Comodo Registry Cleaner and CCleaner are still recommended as well(ideal combination would be Advanced System Care with Comodo Registry Cleaner, I think...).

COMODO Registry Cleaner is still a potential program since COMODO is busy perfecting CIS.

Regardless, it will be the best once its potentials are realized.

I use RegCure and sometime Registry Fix for registry cleaner, only once or twice a month.

CCleaner for use on a more frequent basis.

Malwarebytes to scan for spyware.

Nod 32, of course for AV

and finally no firewall except Windows default's firewall. (I have a router's firewall) :P

Oh, and of course UD as defrag.

Yeah, I have a router's firewall as well, but I was a bit curious and wanted to try something other than Windows'.

I tried out a few of the programs, I'll see how they go. Thank you very much for the responses, much appreciated.

If given a choice, I would use ZoneAlarm Free firewall. Not too intrusive but still effective.

But it does not have anti-spyware.

I had tried it before and grow to like it. :P

4an optimal configuration I recommend:

Registry Cleaner: Ccleaner, Glary Utilityes, Reg Seeker

Firewall: everything you want if you have a router's firewall, even Windows'. Although Comodo, OA or Outpost (they include a hips module).

Antivirus: Nod32 or AntiVir (even free is good)

Antispyware: MalwareBytes, Superantispyware, A-Squared

Hips: EQSecure or System Safety Monitor PRO for the lightness, although Comodo, OA or Outpost (but consider that they're heavy)

Defragment: Ultimate Defrag

Personally I don't use neither antiviruses realtime protection nor firewall (only Windows Firewall behind router) on Win Xp SP3.

I prefear to use LUA, SRP, sandboxie (with secure browser like Opera) and HIPS (actually SystemSafetyMonitor Pro)...
