Epic Games has announced that it has ported Unreal Engine 3 so it can work on products running on Microsoft's Windows RT OS, and showed off a demo running on Asus' Windows RT tablet.

With Windows RT-based devices due to launch in late October, it's likely that one of the most popular applications will be games. Today, Epic Games announced that its Unreal Engine 3 graphics engine and development tools are now available for Windows RT-based game developers.

The company showed off Epic Citadel, a graphics engine demo, running on the Asus Vivo Tab RT tablet-notebook hybrid shown off earlier today at Asus' IFA press event; the product is powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 3 processor.

In a post on NVIDIA's blog, Epic Games VP Mark Rein states:

By porting the full engine as opposed to a modified mobile version, NVIDIA and Epic have made it easy for UE3 developers around the world to bring their best content to Windows RT, Windows 8 and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor. Windows RT code is available to licensees from Epic now and we’re excited to see the great games they develop with it.

The Windows RT news means that we could see quite a few Unreal Engine 3 games ported to run on Windows RT-based devices which will give the platform a healthy gaming boost. So far, there's no word if Epic plans to port any of its own Unreal Engine 3 games, including Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War or Bulletstorm, to Windows RT.
