nsane.forums
For comparing Windows 7 and Windows 8 we will measure and test the performance of various aspects of the operating system including: boot up and shutdown times, file copying, encoding, browsing. Back when Vista first arrived I remember comparing how it performed to XP and being extremely disappointed with the results. Vista was generally rough around the edges and that included drivers, so gaming and productivity applications were more often than not slower in the new OS. Microsoft's PR machine has been hard at work over the past few months, trying to explain the numerous improvements Windows 8 has received on the backend. The good news is that it shows. Coming from the two previews and now the final release of Windows 8, the OS seems smoother than Windows 7. It has been well documented that Windows 8 starts up and shuts down faster, so that wasn’t much of a surprise. Of course, this is merely an informal observation and we are here to back up those impressions with hard numbers (read: lots of benchmarks in the coming pages). For comparing Windows 7 and Windows 8 we will measure and test the performance of various aspects of the operating system including: boot up and shutdown times, file copying, encoding, browsing, gaming and some synthetic benchmarks. The benchmarks. View: Original Article

mosaji
Is there a metric for ease of use between the two on a desktop???
demoneye
if u look at the numbers you will see WIN7 take over WIN8 in most tests , and the one win 8 wins the gap score is mean less....
stylemessiah
Where do i start pointing out the issues with that perfomance test? They test on the fastest hardware, using SSD's etc. About 98% of people will not have the latest hardware, thats a fact.So that makes pretty much every test irrelevant and only of any interest to performance wankers, or gamers as i call them, who, after all are really the ones driving hardware update/upgrade cycles. The rest of us sane people who actually use the computer for meaningful, crazy things like work, will not see a scrap of difference whatsoever.*yawn*
House_maniac
windows eight is faster than win7 but microsoft did a mistake by removing the start button and this is why some users won't make the move or will take more time to make the move unless they are forced to.. dcs18
The only reason that Windows 8 is faster is due to the utter lack of comprehensive Aero & animations. In other words that so called performance test does not hold water.

Planning on D/L-ing once somebody comes up with an actual medicine, not the temp solutions ;) I wanted to ask the users (maybe House Maniac) as to whether he has checked out Shell Menu X. It looks more Win7-ey rather than the XP-ish look of the Classic Shell. I don't have an idea about the functionality though :dunno:
Alanon
The only thing these tests tell me is that it's the same shit whichever way you spin it. I'm on XP now, which easily beats seven in my book. Win8 however, I might switch to. It's got that basic look and feel to it. Who needs Aero anyways? It sure as hell doesn't make anything faster, on more functional... dcs18
Speaking of Aero, it just struck me the Author of that performance test pitted Windows 8 against Windows 7 - that's a blunder. Windows 8 needs to be compared with the sexless and bland Windows XP, instead. It's a no-contest against Windows 7. BTW, Windows XP is reaching End Of Life in 2014 and if that XP V/s Windows 8 performance benchmarking is conducted Windows 8 would have to be retired before Windows XP.
Alanon
It will be a sad day for me when it does. The matter for me is that I already have everything I need with XP. Not once did I ever say - I wish XP could do this...Sure, I don't have aero, but I don't need it (and there's always third party software for simulation). I don't have UAC, but I don't need it (hell, if I didn't get any serious infection without it, I doubt that the following times will change dramatically). I don't have DirectX10, but I play older games anyways. I don't have fast boot up, but when I start the PC in the morning, I immediately go to the bathroom anyways. I don't have Internet Explorer 10, but I don't want it. And so on, and on, and on...Now I'm being forced to simply get another OS. And there I wonder - Why should I get used to anything I don't really need? Generally, the less is the more in my book. Which is why I dread the prospect of new Operating systems and standards. What I do have on XP is .net framework 1.1 and 2.0 - required by several abandonware programs I do need almost daily. So yeah, I would like to see a comparison between 8 and XP as well. If for nothing else, to find out the almost 2GIG growth from the original XP on the CD. Because I just can't get the feeling out of my bones - when all of them are stripped down to their bare bones - they are the same as XP...
