Net Applications: Windows XP and Windows 7 almost neck and neck

If you believe the information from StatCounter, Windows 7 has been the most used PC operating system

worldwide for some time. However, its main OS stat recording rival Net Applications still shows that Windows

XP is number one. However, that could change very soon, perhaps next month.

In Net Applications' latest results for July 2012, Windows XP is shown as being on top, with the chart

showing it being used on 42.86 percent of PCs worldwide. However, Windows XP has dropped down on Net

Applications' stats drastically in just a month. In June, it showed the OS as having 43.61 percent of the OS

market share.

Windows 7 is shown to be in second but is closing in on Windows XP with 42.21 percent, according to Net

Applications. In June, Windows 7 was shown to have 41.59 percent of the OS market share. If the drop for

Windows XP continues at its current rate, Windows 7 should be on top of Net Applications' list when the

results for August are released on September 1st.

Windows Vista is a distant third in these latest stats with 6.60 percent of the OS market share and the preview

versions of Windows 8 are being used by 0.20 percent of all PCs running in the world, according to Net Applications.

People who were hoping to upgrade to Win 8 from XP, bypassing Win 7, are screwed. They don't know whether to buy Win 7 at the fag end of it's life-cycle or bite the bullet and grab a copy of Win8 anyways. :dunno:

Of course, they can continue using XP till 2015 (XP Pro is supported till 2014) before switching over to Win 9 maybe ;)
