Administrator DKT27 Posted July 31, 2012 Administrator Share Posted July 31, 2012 Microsoft has just announced a brand new email service that will look and sound familiar but is a new experience built from the ground up to take email to the next level; make the jump to learn more. Microsoft has been working hard over the past few months to build a new email service and they are ready to show off their hard work. The company is announcing a new email platform, Outlook.com, and Microsoft hopes that with a mature sounding domain and a few time-saving features, you will give it a try. The new email service takes a fresh look at the email experience and is changing everything from privacy and workflow, to advertisement placement and attachments to help you get things done faster with less distraction. You can head on over to Outlook.com now and sign up for the preview or if you currently have a Hotmail.com or Live.com email address, you can upgrade your account to the new Outlook.com by going to the "Options" menu and clicking the "Upgrade to Outlook.com"; you will only receive the new UI, not the new domain if you select the upgrade option. The new domain is a welcomed change to Hotmail and Live as it finally gives us a professional sounding platform from Microsoft. While the company will have a tough fight to get users to switch from Gmail, Outlook.com is a colossal step forward for Microsoft's email platforms and is a serious competitor in the market. Neowin got a chance to get our hands on the platform before it launched and put together a handy guide that details all of the new features for Outlook.com; you can find the link below. Administrator DKT27 Posted July 31, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted July 31, 2012 Have a Hotmail or Live email address? Changes are inbound If you currently have an email address from Microsoft (Hotmail, Live) a few changes are inbound but don't worry, your email domain is not going anywhere. Make the jump to learn more about the changes. With the launch of Outlook.com today, you should be aware of a few changes that will be coming down the pipe if you currently use another Microsoft email service such as Live or Hotmail. The good news is that your domain is not going anywhere, but Microsoft believes that the Outlook interface is the best on the web and it will eventually be rolling out to all of its other email platforms; this includes any domain that is currently using the Hotmail experience today. If you like your current layout and do not care for the new Metro design, then you may be out of luck as Microsoft is going to be implementing the UI across all of its properties. The date when this rollout will occur has yet to be announced but know that it is planned for the future. Metro is Microsoft's future, so the news should not come as a surprise as Microsoft works diligently to implement the UI across all of the company's properties. The company's goal is to have all of its products embrace the Metro design language, so it's only a matter of time before Microsoft is all Metro. :view: View: Original Article

sanjoa
@hotmail.com, @live.com, etc. domains are switching to @outlook.com?
Administrator DKT27 Posted August 1, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted August 1, 2012 @hotmail.com, @live.com, etc. domains are switching to @outlook.com? Nope. From what I can understand, you retain .live .hotmail email address, but the site/interface will change and so will all the newly made email addresses (new ones will start with @outlook). I for one have mixed feelings. I like it, but I like non-metro things more cause I feel metro is closed down. Previously it was all open and free, this is like, you are jailed in colours. :(
Administrator DKT27 Posted August 1, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted August 1, 2012 Outlook.com gets 1 million users in first six hours Microsoft has revealed that the newly launched preview version of the Outlook.com web email service has caused one million people to sign up in just the first six hours. Microsoft's launch of its new Outlook.com web email service earlier on Tuesday seems to have generated a ton of interest in its short public life. The new Metro-themed site managed to get one million people to sign up for the preview version of Outlook.com in just its first six hours. Microsoft posted up the news on its Outlook Twitter page on Tuesday evening, along with a chart that shows the number of sign ups (1,004,763, to be exact). Keep in mind that Microsoft launched what they called a "preview version" of the new email service on Tuesday. Some of the promised features, such as the integrated Skype video chat support, have yet to be implemented. The numbers for Outlook.com are certainly impressive, especially if you compare them to Aol Mail, which has been online in one form or another for, well, a long time. AoL recently announced a revamp of its free email service, and also admitted it currently has just 24 million users. As we have reported a few times already in the past several weeks, Google has claimed that its Gmail service now has 425 million users. Comscore claims that Microsoft's Hotmail is still first in terms of users with 325 million unique visitors. Yahoo's email service comes in second with 298 million users, and, at least according to Comscore, Gmail is still in third place with 289 million users. Nope, I was able to keep my 25GB skydrive space :). I also got to keep my old live.com mail (for incoming mails.)
