Administrator DKT27 Posted July 25, 2012 Administrator Share Posted July 25, 2012 Steam move to Linux is a hedge against Windows 8's failure. Valve head—and one-time Microsoft employee—Gabe Newell has branded Windows 8 "a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space" at videogame conference Casual Connect in Seattle. The Valve boss continued, saying that in the fallout from Windows 8, "we'll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people." He argued that one of the last remaining things keeping people away from Linux was the lack of games. Valve is working to bring Left 4 Dead 2 and other Steam titles to Linux in a move that Newell describes as "a hedging strategy." If his predictions about Windows 8 come true, he says "it will be good to have alternatives to hedge against that eventuality." Newell's low opinion of Microsoft's next major operating system has been known for some time. When Michael Larabel of Phoronix visited Valve's Bellevue, WA, campus in April of this year to learn about the company's efforts to port Steam to Linux, he reported that Newell's "negativity for Windows 8 and the future of Microsoft was stunning." Newell is not a disinterested third party. Valve makes money from the commission it takes on Steam sales. Windows 8, with its built-in Windows Store, challenges that revenue source. Features such as Xbox LIVE integration could make the Windows Store and Windows 8 a more appealing platform for gamers and developers alike than Steam. However, the other aspect of the Store—the closed and controlled nature—also concerns him. He attributed Valve's success to the PC's open nature, saying that the company "wouldn't exist" without either the PC or "the openness of the platform." That openness is under threat, though. Newell argues that there is a "strong temptation" to close the platform, because the platform's developers "look at what they can accomplish when they limit the competitors’ access to the platform, and they say 'That's really exciting.'" :view: View: Original Article

RobrPatty
I have to agree with T4C Fantasy. When vista flopped ppl didn't flock to linux. Same with 8. We'll just have to adapt to metro ui.
House_maniac
yea agree with you but you have to agree that if we had the easeness of installing all windows software on linux without third party addons, several of us would have made the move! Tweety.Abd
Its not just the games, rather there are lots of apps which aren't yet compatible with Linux.

ChiliBean
I cannot stand the Metro UI, so I'm going to stay with Windows 7. Until I see every new game released to be also available for Linux then I will switch from Windows 7 to Ubuntu. Hopefully this dream comes true within 10 years but I'm sure if Microsoft is seeing this is affecting Windows sales, they will do something extreme. Maybe payoff game companies to not make their games available for Linux.

Administrator DKT27 Posted July 26, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted July 26, 2012 I don't know. Gabe Newell has worked for Microsoft for 13 years. The guy hates consoles, loves PC game market. He knows entertainment and art in games. He knows both Windows and gaming in and out.I'm not toooo fond of linux either, but the talking point here isn't linux. The point here is that Windows 8 is just bullsh*t. And because of that, Valve is forced to use a lesser popular of a OS.
edwardecl
A lot of windows apps already do work on Linux, all be a it a bit flakey sometimes. Some apps actually run better in Linux depending on how it's written. What Linux needs is more support from developers to get the stuff that does not work working, if Valve could contribute to that then I could see Linux finally taking off for gamers. If they go the extra mile and get Windows games running in steam either using WINE with patches and workarounds or porting then why would anyone stay with Windows? If they can get DirectX11 working in WINE 100% then it would be a major archievement, and I would switch to Linux almost instantly. And I would laugh so much if they can get most off the stuff on Steam to run better on Linux.Although I doubt it :(

Not necessarily, Rob. When people didn't like Vista, they didn't "adapt to it". They just stuck with XP for a few more years. Of course you're not gonna have the same driver & bloat problems with Win8 that you had with Vista, but still, can't imagine people paying a lot of money to get Win8 & jump ship from the universally well liked W7 ;)

The drivers would still be a problem. Especially multi-GPU scaling will continue to be nightmarish outside of a few widely played games ;)
myidisbb
if you like linux then make your own freaken programs. that is the only way its going to happen. sorry but you cant have it the other way. just like you cant offical run wi, ps3 and 360 on the same machine.this is all about market. since there is NO foundation market for linux OS then there will be no making of software for it. period. look at the history of the ibm clone. everyone was thinking ibm dos was going to be the king. boy was they surprise when out of the blue came ms dos. ms dos came on the computer at what look to be free for the consumer. no buying a $1000 computer and then a $1000 OS. i remember TI OS computers and tandy OS computers. notice they are not around anymore just like ibm laptops.software makers know and understand that only certain OSs will make them money. 10 plus years from now there will still be a MS OS. but there will be other computer languages working and running with MS OS. btw apple's days are numbered. google won the smart phone and table war.
