Need firewall and will 2 or more fw lags the computer?

Hi all, I am curious to know if a computer having 2 firewalls, will it lags down the system?

Currently my desktop is having Avira firewall, and so i thought of installing another firewall into my computer, making it into a 'secured' computer :P (though i know it is not very secured haha)

Anyway, i have heard some good fw like zone alarm, comodo etc etc, however are there any easy and simplified ones that there is no need to change alot of settings? Cause from my experience, I used zone alarm last time which is a few years back, as i install and when to surf the net, there are alot of prompting which makes it very irritating...

Please do intro me some good fw, thanks! :D

(If possible, free + life-time XDXD)

Having two firewalls on the same system is not a good idea, if you ask me...

I agree :P .

Having 2 firewall is plain overkill.

Dont install 2 firewalls.

1. It will slow down your computer for over 50%.

2. You dont want it!

You must only have one (1) good software firewall and at least one (1) hardware firewall (router). Your are more secure from external attack with two routers (properly setup).

But 2 software can kill your comp!

No, his computer can't be killed - he already has tried a similar stunt. Check here :)

What the hack?

Hes really a stuntman. He should install 15 Firewalls,26 Antiviruses and 75 Antispywares.

Oh... forgot to mention... All should run simultaneously (<- OMG... how do you spell this word? Is it right?)

Having 2 firewall software will slow down your internet connection.

I use a router firewall and just Windows XP built-in firewall, with firefox browser.

You can go to :

http://www.grc.com/intro.htm

and click on ShieldUP to test the security of your setup.

why in the world do you need 2 firewalls?

having one is enough....actually you have 2 firewalls, if you take into considerations windows's own firewall.

But comodo internet security does the job for me :)

I love COMODO... one last thing though... I just wish they would allow changing of skins like version v3.0.25.378 did ( less hassle :) )

Still prefer ZoneAlarm, may it be the free or Pro version and Outpost!

But presently not using any of them anymore, just Windows XP's firewall and of course router's.

A question for all that have COMODO: Did you disable Defense+? Does the security suffer from this?

If you're really concerned about Defense+, and you're really pissed off it bothering you almost all of the time, just add the program to "My Trusted Software Vendors" or "Computer Security Policy" all located in Defense+ tab.

By disabling the Defense+, one loses HIPS protection - the firewall module however, continues to filter internet traffic.

firewall lol, i use windows and my routers all i need i ran into issues iwth zonealarmPRO something with a faulty update cause my my brothers PC to not allow connection to the net very weird. and for as far sercuity lan line is not as a big an issue as if you have wireless.

I myself use wpa2 aes + wpa tkip, but again i cover my whole block. as well charge my neighbors $5 a month to connect to it I'm in college and my parents don't use my old laptop much so gotta pay the bill somehow.

secondly my router SN and pass is not defaulted and i use mac filtering overkill yes but when portforwarding on a laptop that i move around alot with its easier to have router asign it the same ip each time it connects rather then do it via software everytime i connect. works well with a mac bridge 2 surprisingly

Salik, you need to call your RL friends, you know stuff around your computer? No sériously stop wasting time duplicate stuff on your comp. If your that paranoid, i suggest to use a computer as a gateway to your LAN. That gateway computer is your connection to the web, it scans, log and filter everything before it goes on your LAN. I used that "quarantine" system when i was younger and more active.

BTW i must mention that by "gateway" i dont mean a computer brand...

Like most people suggested, 2 firewalls it is a stupid idea. Most firewall software just re route packets to a hidden proxy server which runs in memory to filter everything. So adding 2 will just do the same thing twice which as you could see will add delay to your network connection. I just use the hardware firewall on my router which is more than enough. You could also use the Windows firewall. People often discredit the windows firewall but really if the zone alarm fan boys knew anything about the technical details of it they would understand why it works well. Plus there is mass hysteria all over the internet that causes people to think they need firewalls but nobody cares to hack into the PC of regular people but there will always be paranoid people. I service alot of computers and I could tell you that 99% of the people who insist on using Zone Alarm are too stupid to know the difference between a real threat and a false positive so when they visit the "free" porn sites and the trojan pops up the Zone Alarm window harassing you every 2 seconds they click Allow and that's how I make a living. :P

I am yet to see Zone Alarm stop an actual threat and by the way I witnessed my friend hack through Zone Alarm already and we stole some files from a nerd's PC then when I posted up his pictures on the internet he called me to throw a tantrum and threatened me with legal action so after I had a good laugh I took down the pictures. However hacking through a hardware firewall I have never seen it done and I am guessing the people who could do it are very rare and could care less about the general public.

@salik,

2 firewall and 3 anti-virus? how much do you think is enough?

Hacker nowadays are going after websites rather than individual. (easier to hack and more thrill)
