Really? Last time I tried this it screwed-up my system, did they improve it? I'm curious.

Currently my favorite defragger is Auslogics Disk Defrag, it's fast, simple, and also FREE.

Has option for standard defrag or optimize/defrag (puts most used files to outer tracks)

After a reboot and try to open it again I got an open disk volume error and the only way it will run is as administrator

Running Vista x64 so may work properly on other os's

Note for UltimateDefrag, you should do this before any defrag job: Start, Run, cmd, type 'cd C:\', type 'fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:' (C representing your drive on which Windows is installed). This will help you get rid of those 'open places' and stuff. You also shouldn't use the 'Respect layout.ini' option for now.

And there's a reason for it being slow, it has to specifically place all files in an order, this is something all other defragmenting apps don't do, therefore UD isn't only a defragmenter but also a file placement optimizer :P

No, that's no excuse for it's unrealistic time consumption, I tried to use UD to defrag my 1TB HDD, and it gave me a ridiculous estimate of time needed to finish, as I recall it was something like 60hours!!, maybe more, I dun remember for sure...

And even when I use it on my smaller drives, it still takes forever, and it ALWAYS leaves fragments behind, so...

Try using PerfectDisk

The 'Estimated time' is never right, I don't know why they implemented that, it's just bullocks. Doesn't make any sense. So don't expect it to take even close to that long.

If you follow my guide and the note I gave you above I promise you it won't leave fragmented files, except for when you're bothered by some system files that can not be moved, by any defragmenter(other than an offline degragmenter, which UD should have released like 2 months ago(grrrr)). You just need to know how to configure it right and all... It takes some time but I guarantee this app will get the full speed of your HD out of it, unlike any other defragmenting tool ;)

Ok....Tried and tested it. Set it to Defrag and Optimize and it put all your most frequently used files near the MFT and the rest behind, much like UD (except that in UD, you can choose).

Simple to set, unlike UD (you have to know what you are doing, though thanks to sought, you can get it right).

It is also much faster, although the first run will take a while.

Agreed that UD is much much better, but some time it just doesn't work as expected.

Recently, it just doesn't defrag the high performance files (just defrag the archive's), don't know why as I did not change any setting since the last time I defraged.

Smart Defrag is for those who do not like to do configuration and just leave it to configure the most frequent used files for optimization.

ultimatedefrag08 screwed up my windows install, could be i selected a sys file from windows to be moved or something, anyway it's unacceptable it can happen.. O.o

so now i use jkdefrag.. altho i was at first dubious, i've realized it kicks ass.. :)

Why cant a Defrag be so easy... i mean its a program it should do things automatically maybe a few clicks here and there for customized but that is it... so this would be nice

I know you are not paid from them or anybody to advertise... lol but i was just saying because so many defrag need you to do this and that and sometimes use CMD... i was talkin in general on the defrag programs... :win: like the windows defrag i mean its simple yet affective... now if they had something like that and simple that made things even better...
