Administrator DKT27 Posted July 13, 2012 Administrator Share Posted July 13, 2012 We already reported on the special offer that will allow anybody to upgrade from the Release Preview, as long as you have "an underlying license for either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7" for a mere $39.99. Now, new information has come to light that could please a lot more people if true. According to a new rumor straight from Microsoft’s insiders, Paul Thurrot and Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft could be doing away with retail media altogether for the Windows 8 release and instead, offer just two packages:Windows Upgrade DVD ($39.99)Windows 8 System Builder Kit (OEM)The Windows 8 System Builder Kit (OEM) is the version you would buy if you're building your own system, so technically that would qualify as the "full version", an upgrade version would fall under the license requirements outlined at the top of this article. Thurrot went on to say that "there's normally a full version of Windows, but maybe not anymore [and] that would be great!" he also said that although the limited promotion is $39.99, the upgrade price has yet to be confirmed; but Thurrot hopes that Microsoft could extend it and make it permanent. It's also worth pointing out that Steve Ballmer already pledged to attack Apple in all areas of their business; offering a cheaper way to upgrade or obtain Windows would align itself a little more with Mac OS X pricing. If we compare the previous version of Windows pricing we get:Windows 7 Professional (OEM): $134.99Windows 7 Professional (Retail): $299.99A significant, and welcome change if it goes ahead. Would this sway some people to bite the bullet and upgrade? We think so, but feel free to leave your comments below. :view: View: Original Article

calguyhunk
well being a low price - I might actually buy a Legit copy :P The affordable pricing unfortunately is for an "underlying genuine license". I may buy a legit copy if there's a way of turning a Daz activated copy into 'legit'. But only if that $40 pricing is for the Pro version and not the basic version without Media Center and all. All this of course considering that it doesn't turn out to be the next Vista/ME ;)
ck_kent
I wonder if this new system builder (OEM) edition will be still be considered licensed if you go abroad. The main difference before between the retail version and the OEM is that the OEM is only licensed inside your country. If you go abroad with your computer/laptop and the Windows installed is OEM, that would make it illegal.

calguyhunk
You guys do realize that there'll be no $290 sorta' crazy pricing, right? XP, Vista, 7. That means almost 80% of the x86 universe and 99% of 'Windows' universe. So everybody basically gets a $40 copy if you take the bait that is. MSFT has prolly realized that Win 8 is a little too ahead of it's time at best and a poorly executed and utterly mistimed OS at worst & it'll take 'em a lot of hard work to convince consumers that we actually need this fancy-smancy pseudo-touch optimized OS on our x86 desktops for gameplay, productivity, CAD, folding@home/college projects or indeed for YouTube, Netflix or Farmville :P
dcs18
Have begun to suspect that some of us wont accept Windows 8 even if it's offered free - hmmm, I might possibly consent to it . . . . . . . . . . . . for a bribe.

Administrator DKT27 Posted July 14, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted July 14, 2012 I open Metro screenshot and make it fullscreen. Tell my sister that I have installed Windows 8. My sister's reaction? Bring back Windows 7 or first I'll puke and then f***ing kill you.
madeinheaven
There is enough work around stopping Metro, you can do it manually or with software's, if that is the only case complaining about cause rest is almost similar with Windows7 and this is even faster to me. Nevermind i respect what ever your exucuse but i surell go and get it for $39.99 or $69.99.
Administrator DKT27 Posted July 14, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted July 14, 2012 I am thinking about Windows 8 and will upgrade if:1. Metro can be effectively disabled.2. W8 gets good reviews or is very good outside Metro.3. Because Windows 8 is integrated with Live accounts, if M$ finds a person pirating, it doesn't ban that Live/Hotmail account. Bring back Windows 7 or first I'll puke and then f***ing kill you. :eek:I don't really blame her. :D I would rather be a KillBill and strip my Windows 7 down to bare-metal which would then cause it to become as fast as Windows 8 (if not faster) than get suckered of my hard-earned $39.99 or $69.99. It's also such a shame that one has to resort to the assistance of additional software to get rid of the Windows 8 ugliness - wouldn't be too surprised, too; if even my stripped down bare-metal Windows 7 ended up looking much more glam. than the software-enhanced Windows 8. Edit: For those wondering about all the hoopla on the Windows Secure Boot feature, I suspect it might have to do with preemptive stone-walling of the Daz loader. Be also ready to shell out more than the $39.99 or $69.99 - Windows 8 is cloud based, they'll be scanning my a$$ in & out unto EOL (unlike my Windows 7 which is in eternal wedlock state.) Worried about this from a long time. However, the secure boot only seems to be hardware based, I mean, it needs a BIOS for that and needs to be enabled in BIOS. Secure boot will 100% guaranteed disable Daz loader. I'm still very concerned about Windows handling my account. I don't like full screen apps either. I use WLM regularly. calguyhunk
Secure boot will 100% guaranteed disable Daz loader. Maybe BIOS mods will be the only way then. :dunno: I have modded my BIOS, but didn't really want to fix something that ain't broken. ;) I don't like full screen apps either. Who does outside of your screen real estate starved phone/Tab? Why would anybody need a full screen app on his 27" 1080p monitor? :o What's sauce for the Goose ain't always sauce for the Gander. What's good for your 4" screen looks like it's something that'll try to eat you on a 20+ inch monstrosity. :o I am thinking about Windows 8 and will upgrade if: 1. Metro can be effectively disabled. 2. W8 gets good reviews or is very good outside Metro. Yes and yes on both counts :) And the old fashioned folders and file system wasn't half bad (to be accessed from the start button, often. Why the hell did they have to tamper with that?). Why do they have to dumb down everything? "Here! Click on this shiny little button to launch your "App" will ya?" I mean :wtf: \rant :P
Administrator DKT27 Posted July 15, 2012 Author Administrator Share Posted July 15, 2012 As I said, secure boot is only for BIOS which supports it, only new motherboard support UEFI. Those having 1+ years old computer has no reason to worry. And even if one has a secure boot motherboard, I'm sure there would be a way to disable it.Well, I'm on a 17" monitor with 1280x1024 resolution, but yea, get the point, and a very good one too.I didn't get you in "old fashioned folders and file system", but I guess you mean normal explorer. Well, all that is fine in desktop. What I'll do:Wait for 3-4 months to be exactly sure it's good and M$ not is limiting me or forcing me to use the Metro. In addition to make sure we have a fix (I ain't gonna pay $1, forget $40 [financial reasons]).If the above is done. I'll upgrade to Windows 8. First and foremost, select "Local Profile" while installing (it is very important if you don't want to get f**ked up by M$). When everything done, I'll probably go with a start menu mod software Start8 or something else which is better.I'm concerned about WLM, I don't want it to become full metro, lets see.I don't know, I may not even switch. :dunno:
calguyhunk
Well, I'm on a 17" monitor with 1280x1024 resolution... The three in my house are 18.5" @ 1360x768, 20" @ 1600x900, and my 15.6" lappy @ 1366x768. The two others not in use are a 17" CRT @ 1280 x 1024 and an HP Mini with a 10" screen @ 1024x600 ;) But just saying. Lotsa gamers, design (CAD) students, and photo editors have 'em (IPS for gamers and TN generally for the others mentioned), and some office terminals (at stock exchanges etc. for clearer viewing of rates etc.) are also pretty biga$$ :P I didn't get you in "old fashioned folders and file system"... It's called sarcasm :hehe: ...I guess you mean normal explorer. Well, all that is fine in desktop. Yeah, ribbon and all... :P
