At a Churchill Club event in Santa Clara, Calif., Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talks to Ann Winblad, a partner at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, on its long-term strategy to battle Google in the search market. Ballmer says that to succeed, the company will have to find a way to change the experience and the economics of search, redefining the category. Play the video

Well, it took 7 years for them to make a good product (xp, not vista silly). I would say that because the internet is exponentialy more complex then a OS, its going to be a while... and Google has a habbit of constantly improving their products.

Well Microsoft is fighting on too many fronts like MSN vs Google then IE vs Firefox and now add Chrome to the competition also although Windows Xp was a good OS but Vista sucks so concentrate on it Ballmer than moving on to new battlefields. ;) :P ;)
