Windows 8’s No-Aero Desktop Interface Leaks

One of the major changes that Microsoft announced for Windows 8’s interface was the lack of the Aero Glass that users were already accustomed to in Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

The Redmond-based software giant said that this change is bound to result in a nicer, cleaner look of the desktop in Windows 8, and that it would affect checkboxes, buttons, sliders and other elements as well.

The Release Preview flavor of Windows 8 was released two weeks ago without these changes inside, but the company did say that future versions of the platform would sport them.

Today, however, a series of leaked screenshots that emerged over at Winunleaked.tk are meant to offer us a look at what these changes would involve.

Moving forth with the platform’s development, the UI of the Windows 8 desktop will be flattened, while the transparency that was present in Windows 7 will not be there for all users to enjoy.

According to Microsoft, the appearance of windows will be crisper as a result of removing unnecessary shadows and transparency. Moreover, glows and gradients were removed from buttons within the chrome.

Of course, the overall feel of the UI will remain mostly unchanged from Windows 7, since Microsoft is looking into offering continuity with the platform.

However, the Redmond-based software giant is bringing to Windows 8’s desktop the look of the Metro interface that took over the platform, something that was officially announced several weeks ago.

Users will be able to customize the desktop color, and they will even receive access to the color mixer in the Color and Appearance settings, but they won’t be able to bring the Aero Glass back.

Since the screenshots were taken with a pre-RTM version of the platform, we should expect Microsoft to perform even more changes to the Windows 8 UI before the OS is released to manufacturing, something that should happen at the end of July, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.

In the meantime, however, you can try out the Windows 8 Release Preview build 8400 to learn more on the novelties that Microsoft packed the platform with when compared to Windows 7.

These leaks are just about as exciting as the ones that I experienced deep within my diapers as a 2-year-old. :D

Hey, why not use the default interface then? It's exactly the same as if you choose the white colour. :)

I can't believe that after so many years of trying to achieve a nice 3D UI, MS is giving up to a classic 2D just to be tablet efficient...

Aero was not the best, but it was a step in the right direction... This now is a step backwards...

I think MS should consider a new design team...

I disable many services, but not the Themes service usually, because design and presentation matter to me...

However with this minimalistic approach, it seems just to switch the whole lot off, short-circuits the whole process and saves memory too.

Can't really be sure, but all this seems like a good step forward to me.

Xp never had this fancy graphics of Vista or 7. And it's still the best.

This Win 8 has potential to get somewhere right (if only they'd lay off the tablet shit a little).

Looking at the very first pic, for me, the ugly OS just got uglier.

It's like, your graphics card drivers have failed, so you are forced to use Glass-less, ugly Aero UI. :x

M$ is forcing us to use this BS UI? Before anyone says it's not forcing anyone to use Windows 8, just wait and watch, how M$ brings new, good non-OS centric features exclusive to Windows 8. -_-

Useless OS...

Microsoft should be renamed Microcrap or rather... Macrocrap

@DKT27:

Nice :uhoh:

Win8 = Win98

A little more and they will probably bring the Win98 BSOD back too.

However, instead of the usual "Press any key to continue" it's going to be "Tap the screen to continue".

@mosaji:

They already are.

M$ = Micro$hit

In a sly attempt to promote Internet Explorer, look where Microsoft has placed the IE icon. :unsure:

I couldn't agree more.

A while back before the release of Windows 7 SP1 didn't Microsoft state that they were intending to disable the Aero-Glass effect given that it consumes more power? I can understand the decision to implement a simplified UI on a mobile platform/device, still prefer Aero and the effects though.

You go back only when you realize that you've made a mistake. It means that you're not arrogant and bull-headed. It means that you are able to acknowledge your mistakes, ready to learn from them and rectify them going forward. It means that you are not arrogant enough not to know when to cut your losses. :think:

But when you've been so well received by one and all both in terms of form and function, then to go back 15 years, when the world has moved a million miles forward, is nothing but lunacy. This is what happens when you know that you've got a virtual monopoly and whatever crap you push down the throat of your gullible (and often helpless, may I add) customers, they'll just have to swallow. :nono:

I can understand the tablet bit, but shouldn't the 'PC' users at least have an option? I mean :wtf:

In any case, as of 2012, does any one of us honestly feel that W7 looks/feels dated? Any one here genuinely believes that we are in real need of a new OS to take advantage of some stunning new feature that cannot be delivered through the existing OS? :dunno:

One chance: Only a fool would prefer their hypocritical 8. Look, how stupid those who want a computer to the Trash Smartphone that people will be surprised that I knew my cunning LCD monitor and typing on my computer cause irritation

Do they sure this is a better version of their misadventures 7? The answer: It's just bullshit and FUCK version
