Toshiba refreshes its Portege ultrabook, unveils ultra-wide-screen U845W

Recommended Posts

Toshiba refreshed its sole ultrabook offering today while also introducing a couple of new models, one of them sporting a rather unconventional 21:9 aspect ratio. The Satellite U845W is targeted at movie enthusiasts who enjoy watching films in their original format, without black borders above and below, thanks to a 14.4-inch diagonal ultrawide-HD TruBrite display and native 1792 x 768 resolution.

It’s a tad bulkier than most ultrabooks at just under four pounds and 0.81 inches thick. Spec-wise you can expect a third-generation Intel Core i processor, can support up to 10GB of RAM, and comes with a 500GB hard drive along a 32GB SSD for caching frequently accessed files, or a 256GB SSD. Other features include three USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, an SD card slot, HDMI and Harman Kardon speakers.

The Toshiba Satellite U845W will be released on July 15th for $1,000 and outside the US in Q3 as the U840W. The company also announced the U845 ultrabook, which is essentially the same machine without the ultra wide form factor. It will be available June 24 at a more affordable $750.

Meanwhile, Toshiba’s well regarded Portege Z835 is also getting upgraded with Ivy Bridge processors and rechristened as the Z935. The 13.3-inch laptop is super light, weighing in at just over 2.4 pounds, and it's a slim 8.3mm at its thinnest point. Specs include Intel's HD 4000 graphics, up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM, up to 512GB SSD, and an array of ports that include USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, VGA and an SD card reader.

The Portégé Z935 will be available in the US on June 24, starting at $899.99.
