AMD to stop monthly Catalyst driver updates

AMD has announced that it will stop its normal practice of releasing new Catalyst drivers for its Radeon graphics chips every month. AMD will now release new updates "when it makes sense."

AMD, and before them ATI, had the practice of releasing new Catalyst drivers for its Radeon graphics cards at least once a month, with special driver updates as needed. That era is apparently done with at AMD. In a post on its game blog today, the company announced it would no longer update the Catalyst drivers every single month.

AMD didn't go into too much detail in explaining the change, saying, "We will still continue with the Catalyst naming convention; Catalyst: Year.Month., You just won’t see a new driver every single month. We are confident that this will only benefit the end user; you’ll only need to upgrade to a new Catalyst driver, when it makes sense."

Of course, AMD's main rival in the PC graphics space, NVIDIA, also releases new graphics drivers when the time is right and doesn't have a set schedule for doing so.

The blog post also announces that the beta version of AMD's Catalyst 12.6 drivers is now available to download. The company has also launched a new issue reporting form for people who experience problems with new Catalyst driver updates. AMD states, "This is not just a check-box for us – we take these reports very seriously. We will review every report posted here and investigate every issue encountered."

I myself prefer to stick to the latest stable version of Catalyst. :)

Unno it might just be coincidence or something but I forget after which Driver I started getting BSOD's.

Tested RAM wasn't it, since I also bought new RAM.

Tested Video Card, wasn't it since i got another one (Sadly it wasn't another ATI one, so no Nvidia to test which it can confirm it's ATI for sure)

Nothing hardware related was changed, only Driver updates for video card.

And I THINK these BSOD's began after the 12 series (Driver). Unless just bad luck and my MOBO itself is at fault.

Can't you check via Bluescreenview? If every dump is saying that a different driver has caused it then it's a hardware error, if it keeps noting an AMD driver on all the BSOD dumps, it's AMD drivers. However, best thing is to try 11.x and then the latest version.

Yups it's Always ATI related, forgot the name, but it's the same thing all the time.

When googling about it though, they usually point to Memory issues over ATI. So it's sorta still a mystery as to the cause.

But when I was checking a forum about ATI drivers, seems it's just ATI that has issues and Nvidia seems to have the least issues when it comes to upgrading drivers.

I see. If you can find the exact problem, you should try their new reporting system as mentioned in the article, just select "other" in the graphics card. Also, I may have missed it, but where does it say that it won't support your 4860 anymore? :)

Found it here:

As for the reporting, it's abit hard to report it since I can't 100% replicate/trigger it.

It's a bit random more than anything else.

I think it's only meant for beta drivers, not stable. Hell lot of users are still on 4xxx and 48xx specifically. However, lets wait for final release.

You should try finding the problem then, replicate it and find the reason of it. I have tried their reporting system before a year or so ago and they had fixed the bug just after reported, the bug users were talking in their forums for months. :P But yea, try finding the reason, there has to be one, by finding and reporting, you are not only helping yourself, but also the others who maybe having the same problem but are unable to get hold of it.

You see when I read this thread it only conflicts me more. In my head I always think about buying AMD gpu but end up getting nvidia for practical reasons.

I like the Radeon hardware but prefer the nvidia software. :( :s
