f you are planning to download the Windows 8 Release Preview in a few days, you might also want to check out the new Windows PC desktop app for SkyDrive. Microsoft announced today that it has released new Windows PC and Mac versions of the SkyDrive app and the Windows port will include a special feature just for Windows 8 Release Preview users.

According to Microsoft, "Right from the Photos app in Windows 8, you can fetch photos stored on your other PCs that have SkyDrive installed – no matter where you are or how many terabytes of photos you have stored on the PC you are accessing." More information on this unique feature for SkyDrive on Windows 8 will be revealed soon.

The new versions of the Windows and Mac SkyDrive apps also update your SkyDrive folder faster if changes are made on other devices. The OS X Lion app has been changed so it no longer shows an app icon in the dock when it is running. Oh, and the number of individual files that can be put in a SkyDrive folder has been increased. Previously, "just" 150,000 files could be stored but that number has been boosted to a massive 10 million files.

The updates to the Windows and Mac apps should be made automatically in the next week or so, according to Microsoft.
