Samsung's next major smartphone release has seen a large amount of carrier pre-orders for its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III.

A Samsung official told a Korean newspaper the company has received a whopping nine million carrier pre-orders for its next flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S III. The new phone, which is set to go on sale May 29 in Germany before releasing in other countries, is currently being manufactured at a South Korean facility.

The news was reported by the Korea Economic Daily, according to Reuters. Samsung declined to comment on the story when reached by Reuters.

The Galaxy S III was officially announced earlier this month at a press event in London on May 3. The phone will feature a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution. Samsung's TouchWiz interface will be included on the Android 4.0 phone. An LTE edition of the phone won't be released until later in the year, with the United States expected to receive an LTE version sometime in the summer.

Yesterday it was revealed that 40 percent of all Android smartphone sales come from Samsung devices. This makes Samsung the most-popular Android device manufacturer by a large margin, as none of its competitors were able to amass even 10 percent of Android smartphone sales. Additionally, the company was also the leader in overall smartphone sales last quarter, with 38 million devices sold compared to Apple's 33.1 million devices sold for Q1 2012.
