Posted ImageApple has released a new update to OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview 3 noting that certain types of hardware are no longer supported (though only temporarily), while others may even gain specific features.

The Cupertino, Calif. computer giant is informing registered developers that “a pre-release version of the OS X Mountain Lion software is now available.”

“If you have build 12A178q or higher installed, the new build of OS X Mountain Lion is available through Software Update,” the company explains. Namely, build 12A206J is the new version which only applies to Client implementations of the OS.

“A new Server build will be available later,” said Apple.

Testers are urged to review these instructions completely before attempting to install the new build. There are some exceptions, such as MacBook Pro 3,1 models not being supported in this build of Mountain Lion.

Apple says “future developer previews will restore support for this configuration,” thus confirming that there will be at least one more developer release before the final version of Mountain Lion.

To install this pre-release version of OS X Mountain Lion, testers must access Software Update in the Mac App Store -> click on the Apple menu -> select Software Update -> the Mac App Store will launch and display the new build -> click on the “…More” link and find the update called “Mountain Lion Developer Preview Update 10.8″ -> click the corresponding Update button.

It’s not just developers who are being notified that there’s a new test build available, but also customers enrolled in the AppleSeed program, which yields Mac OS X betas once every couple of years for regular people to test out.

This time around, Apple informs that the company is “preparing for possible hardware specific software updates on OS X Mountain Lion.” More on this later today
