Speeding up Windows Vista

If you care more about performance than minor whistles and details, then the next guide helps you to do that.

1. Turn Windows features on or of

Open Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features Pick from the sidemenu Turn windows features on or off

Then you can see a Feature list, where you can disable unnecessary options

features.jpg

If you aren't sure what you can disable, then you can peek into the box which appears when you hold the mouse over it. Generally it is recommended to clean up the list, except for these things

XPS Viewer (under .NET Framework 3.0l)

Remote Differential Compression (a network optimizer)

Windows Ultimate Extras

I left on Windows games also.

This won't remove those features completely, it will just disable them, saving resources.

2. Unnecessary services off

Start(if you use vista menu, then write into search services.msc, if you use classic start menu, then run services.msc)

To turn off the feature, right click on it, select Properties and disabled

serv.jpg

Services you can safely disable

Computer Browser

Distributed Link Tracking Client

IKE and AuthIP IP Keying Modules

Offline Files

Remote Registry

Tablet PC Input Service (unless you're using a tablet PC)

Windows Error Reporting

Services you must not disable

Multimedia Class Scheduler

Plug and Play

Superfetch

Task Scheduler

Windows Audio

Windows Driver Foundation

Services which are most commonly disabled

DFS Replication

Computer Browser

Distributed Link Tracking Client

IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules

IP Helper

IPsec Policy Agent

KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator

Offline Files

Remote Registry

Secondary Logon

Security Center (Use caution if you disable security services!)

SSDP Discovery

Tablet PC Input Service

Terminal Services

Windows Defender (Ditto the above warning!)

Windows Error Reporting Service

If something won't work after disabling a service, then reopen the service, which is needed.

3. Default Windows startup programs – think carefully what you really need

Start(if you use vista menu, then into search msconfig, if you use classic start menu, then run msconfig) In the opened windows choose startup and look at the list, remove the tick from the programs you don't need to startup by default and click ok.

4. Disabling details and and effects

Changing the appearance - right click on desktop and choose personalize/theme and from there Windows classic

Remove the sidebar - although you can run cool things on there, it still eats resources

Graphical effects off - Control Panel/Performance and System Tools and in the opened window choose Adjust Visual Effects and then Adjust best performance (you can tick the things which you want, but I'm sure not everything is necessary though)

5. ReadyBoost

ReadyBoost is an interesting thing, which uses USB Flash device on Windows to gain extra power.

Connect your USB flash device, search it(Removable Disk), left click properties and in the opened window choose ReadyBoost

The information has been gathered using Google, and testing it myself.

Good luck speeding up your computer !

I have yet to make the switch over to Vista just cuase I don't realyl need to at the moment.. But I was wondering if there happens to be a Registry Tweak that you can just 'double click' and have it sorta 'tweak' your system. As I have one setup for XP, although I still have ot do a few manual tweaks, but having a .reg file at hand makes thigns much, easier so I was curious if there happens to be one.

As I have no rush to really upgrade to Vista at any time, as it won't serve me any beneficial gain.

But thanks for the guide seems a bit similiar to XP.

I have only 2GB ram and my 4GB USB drive all for ReadyBoost!

Vista should work good on your PC.

Vista is good for me. I dont know why people say: Vista is f***ing shit and so on...

If you want Vista you must have a solid computer (as solid I mean POWER!).

@ Bizarre:

I wanted to install vLite and it says that I need a program from Micro$oft -> 1.6GB!? Did you download it?

Yeah, I did type vLite.

nLite is the same as vLite... they both have the ability to remove any feature the user wants to remove :) .

Why don't you just download the SP1 version?

I did download the version without SP1 at poor speed.

The SP1 has no speed at all.

Do you know where can I download it? At TPB the speed is really poor.

BTW: I did try to slipstream the SP1 in my new Vista, but you can only do that on 64-bit OSs. DAAAAAMN!
