Samurai Posted August 9, 2008 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Russia is on the verge of all-out war with one of its nearest neighbours after Moscow's tanks and troops battled their way into Georgia.Georgia Troops Open Fire near Tskhinvali.Hundreds of civilians have reportedly been killed and world leaders called for an immediate end to the violence.The conflict stems from a long-running dispute between Georgia and rebels in the province of South Ossetia, which is loyal to Russia and proclaimed itself independent in the 1990s.On Friday, Moscow sent troops into the region to defend Russians under fire from a Tbilisi offensive to regain control over the province.The United Nations has been holding an emergency meeting after the Georgian government asked the west for help.Georgian forces today launched the latest in a series of artillery attacks on Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway Georgian region, a South Ossetian government spokeswoman said.Russian forces said they had counter-attacked.Georgia said it was under Russian aerial bombardment in what the country's UN Ambassador Irakli Alasania described as "a full-scale military invasion".The United States, the European Union and the OSCE were preparing to send a joint delegation to Georgia to try to broker a ceasefire, the EU said.Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said 30 people had died on the Georgian side, but separatist leader Eduard Kokoity put the overall death toll from Friday far higher."Slightly more than 1,400 people have died," Mr Kokoity said.In a claim that Moscow denied, Georgia's interior ministry said five Russian aircraft had been shot down.The Russian military said ithat more than 10 Russian peacekeepers had been killed in Tskhinvali, as Georgian ordnance slammed into their barracks.Source | Sky News Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We have our former prime minister as their president's councillor. Why did this conflict even start ? You must think that Goergia are either insanely brave or stupidly crazy. We have our former prime minister as their president's councillor. Why did this conflict even start ? You must think that Goergia are either insanely brave or stupidly crazy.They probably wish EU/USA help them 'fight' Russia(with fight I mean politically ;))... My best guess. Atasas Posted August 9, 2008 Share Posted August 9, 2008 Yeah on one hand separatistic movements arround the world is being applauded, on the other looses any sense (LESS THAN MILLION POPULATION COUNTRYS) Georgians where a bit too brave in trying to keep country in one piece as any wars are welcomed by russians due to the fact of them being neglected lately.Big picture: russians dont realy care about Osetians (they ar'nt russians), but missing the days uf USSR;russians own population is puzzled on what is it for them?;Georgians now in big trouble as apart from osetian war they will loose another reagion (Abkhazia)winners?- russians becouse they can! as Georgia has no financial gains for "west" apart from talks of objection against russians, will be destroied once more... Beware.Damn right. Russia uses cyber attacks... they did that to Estonia and they are doing that to Georgia also. We have now established some kind of cyber defense forces (which is a part of the military)... and now we are providing help to Georgia to solve the cyber problems.
