As Ars has previously reported, Google has been working on an updated version of its Chrome OS UI, abandoning the company's fullscreen browser approach for a more traditional, familiar windowing system. Now, certain Chromebook owners can finally try the revamped interface for themselves.

The new Chrome OS window manager is dubbed "Aura." According Google, Aura will offer "rich visuals, large-scale animated transitions and effects that can be produced only with the assistance of hardware acceleration." Some of the more obvious changes include a Windows-style task bar and system tray, overlapping windows, and a traditional desktop where application shortcuts now live. However, most of the operating system's core functionality will still be accessed in-browser.

Curiously, Google has decided not to support the original CR-48 Chromebook with this release "due to platform considerations," according to the Google Chrome team's Orit Mazor. However, this appears to be only a temporary measure, with the promise that CR-48 devices will be brought "back onto the release train" after Chrome 19.

Owners of Samsung Series 5 and Acer AC700 Chromebooks can download the most recent update, version 19.0.1048.17, from the Chrome OS development channel now. It's likely that more information—including news of a Sony VAIO Chromebook—will be unveiled at Google's I/O conference in June.
