[Solved] Malwarebytes' won't scan

Every time I try to run a quick scan on my friend's desktop, Malwarebytes' will freeze at 0 seconds! Basically it won't even start the scan. Here's what I've tried with no luck:

-Uninstalled Malwarebytes' and removed from registry

-Ran CCleaner

-Ran TFC.exe (suggested on a website)

His desktop is running Windows 7 Professional x64.

better try running the venerable Combofix to get through some tough nasties.. works great but caution is needed..

I don't think he has a malware infection, I just think something is fishy with the program.

I'll try these suggestions and post back when it's fixed. In the meantime, keep 'em comin'! :)

EDIT: Malwarebytes' does not scan in safe mode and SUPERAntispyware is able to run scans.

there really is no harm in trying it now would it?

I suppose not, but it would be nice to find a solution should the problem arise on another computer.

1. Uninstall MBAM

2. Restart computer

3. Download and run this utility.

4. Re-install

5. Run Scan

6. Report findings.

I did that and it didn't work.

He is running the latest version of ESET NOD32, and I can't change the settings on Windows Firewall because it says, "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings" then gives error code 0x80070424. I'm thinking this might have something to do with the problem. I've tried doing what I've found, which has consisted of numerous "Fix it for me" downloads, but none of them have fixed the problem. The Windows Firewall service doesn't show up in the service menu.

EDIT: I fixed the problem with the firewall, but the problem with Malwarebytes' still remains.

Hey, not meaning to be as rude as I sounded in my previous post. Just a little suggestion, not many programs can stop something like MBAM from marching. I'd personally take a closer look at programs like HIPS, SandBoxie, etc., etc.

The bad news as 2 examples is that; there's a little bit of retarded HIPS module in NOD32. There's another retarded bit of sandboxie module in COMODO. Hope you understand what I'm trying to express. Good-luck.

Not a problem here, either. But, why should our (your & my) HIPS rules in ESET be necessarily identical to Knightmare's rules???

ComboFix has got no relationship with HIPS.

I understand this. I was simply adding on to the list of things that I've tried.

You tried http://www.malwareby...mbam-clean.exe. Maybe try http://www.carifred.com/uvk/ Ultra Virus Killer to repair scripts and try running MBAM through this program. Also HMP and SAS and whatever else you want to try.

Yes, I have tried mbam-clean and SAS. SAS can run scans just fine, and mbam-clean did not fix my issue.

The difficult way to troubleshoot your issue would be to check all MBAM entries within your HIPS & SandBoxie (including modules for both) for erroneous entries.

The easier way would be to disable all sort of HIPS & Sandboxie with due prevention from starting up with Windows and then rebooting to see whether the issue exists.

Sandboxie is out of the questions because it doesn't exist on this computer. I'll try the HIPS suggestion but I don't understand why it would randomly stop mbam from working.

EDIT: Malwarebytes' is working, though I'm not sure if HIPS was the problem or not. I disabled and tried the scan, which worked, but it is now running with HIPS enabled. Did the disable and enable reset some settings in ESET?

mostly people don't know how to change the rule

@Knightmare

i don't think disable HIPS will reset any setting

maybe some file permission error

can you test it again so we can be sure that disable HIPS fix it
