Mozilla Corporation has released Firefox 11, the latest version of the popular open source web browser, with new features that can migrate data from Google Chrome and sync add-ons across computers.

Right on schedule six weeks after the release of Firefox 10, Mozilla Corporation has released Firefox 11, the latest version of the popular open source web browser. Users who update will find new features such as an option to migrate bookmarks, history and cookies from competing web browser Google Chrome, a fix for Growl notifications in Mac OS X, and the ability to synchronize add-ons across multiple computers.

Firefox 11 was originally going to be delayed a day or two due to a security bug reported by ZDI, but as explained on the Firefox blog by Senior Director of Firefox Engineering Johnathan Nightingale, the security bug at issue was already identified and fixed in Firefox. However, Firefox 11 is currently only available as a manual update for now in consideration of Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday." Users who wish to update can go to Help > About Firefox in the menu bar to download and install from within the application, or visit the Firefox website to download and install manually.

As mentioned earlier, one of the major additions to this version is a feature to import bookmarks, history and cookies from Google Chrome, presumably in an effort to win back defectors in a competition for second place of web browsers that seems to go to either Firefox or Chrome depending on which way the wind is blowing. Mac users will be pleased to find a fix for the Growl notifications, and the option to synchronize Firefox add-ons across multiple computers sounds fantastic to die-hard Firefox users.

The release notes can be viewed here, while the more comprehensive complete list of bug fixes can be viewed here.
