Closing Megaupload for piracy made an impact. Some file sharing services are retreating, but MediaFire says they have nothing to worry about.

That's the news from MediaFire CEO Derek Labian in an interview in VentureBeat. "We don't have a business built on copyright infringement," says Labian. He also slammed Megaupload for "making a ridiculous amount of money with ridiculously bad service," noting the closed file sharing provider allowed people to upload free but charged for large downloads, and paid pirates for content.

Yet the news of MediaFire's denouncing Megaupload for promoting piracy, while claiming themselves to be "a legitimate business targeting professionals," caught many by surprise. Also surprising to users? That Labian announced MediaFire how closely he works with the feds, including, "Homeland Security, ICE, and the FBI." This could just be part of complying with various official requests to remove content challenged by copyright holders, but many worry the cooperation goes further.

MF better not go down as that's where ALL my files are upped to. They aren't American copyright stuff, mainly Japanese, not sure if that makes a difference.

@SacredCultivator It only takes 1 person to ruin it for everyone else. Doesn't matter if your stuff on MU was legit, it's gone now. Same thing for MF if it does go down.

It's better to make a move right here right now. We can't just trust those S.O.B anyway.

In business, it is called branding or defining who you are as a organization. They are trying to their mission statement and differing themselves from MU. It is all about perception and how you PR your organization. It is good that they are not panicking like the other sites and coming up with a plan to deal with the new rules and regulations. As a business, you have to adapt to the surrounding landscape and deal with any competitors or threats to your organization.

It is about survival and if a case is brought before them, they can say that they were cooperating with authority. They can in turn say they have nothing to hide. They're trying to make themselves a legitimate business. Let say if they are serve legal papers then they say they have cooperated with authority. It is about PR. Just read a couple of articles on Yahoo about MU and they are branding those guys as pirates and criminals even though they have not been found guilty yet. It is in the court of public opinions right now. Now if you have make yourself sound like a legitimate business then you can win public opinions and thus you can affect the juror pool. I'm not saying it is right or wrong. Just want to explain what goes on in making a business decision.

That is a good point, and I was thinking of something similar last night. They are doing it like how the politicians delivered SOPA: "If I say it is better for America, then it is." Also this move to differentiate themselves will start the process to help shape the public's view of their business if they ever face legal prosecution.
